I watched the movie Thursday night, December 17, 2015 at 10:30 pm in Columbus, OH
The continuation of the Star Wars saga. In Episode 6 we watched the Empire be seemingly crushed by the rebellion. Vader kills his own master, The Emporer. The Death Star is blown up by the rebels. Darth Vader is redeemed. He dies after looking apon his son, Luke for the first and last time. Han and Leia are young and in love. Luke is a Jedi Knight, presumably the last at that time. Leia, though a Skywalker, had only just become aware she too had powers.
Thirty years later, the Jedi are in hiding still, primarily Luke Skywalker. The darkness of the force has been awakened and a new power has been terrorizing the galaxy. The planets are living but some are scavengers still. Most of the galaxy thinks Luke, the force, Han and Leia are all myths and stories.
A young Sith Lord under the "guidance" of Supreme Leader Snoke, Kylo Ren, is leading the storm troopers (made up of men and women, stolen, and trained [or brain-conditioned] from birth [like Spartans?]) in the new First Order. It is mentioned that perhaps they should use the clones again. They are terrorizing towns looking for clues about the whereabouts of Luke. The First Order are finishing the new "Death Star" (I cannot recall the new name it was given) and Kylo's mission is to find and kill Luke Skywalker, who has vanished. This new "Death Star" is planet big, uses the sun's energy to destroy planets etc...
Star Killer Base
Luke vanished after his apprentice, Ben Solo turned to the dark side thus becoming Kylo Ren. Luke felt guilty about it, since he is the son of his best friend, Han Solo and Luke's nephew. Kylo seems to be visibly confused. He draws strength from his grandfathers burned mask he somehow obtained. He wants to be like him but he is still young and is undisplined in the ways of the force on either side. He seems like he has good in him but that he is truly afraid of Supreme Leader Snoke. Kylo has tantrums like Anakin first had when the Emporerer told him about Padme. His strength is great though. It seems more powerful in mind manipulation, almost like compulsion.
A new storm trooper rebels against the training and mind control and helps the rebels pilot, Poe Dameron, escape from Kylo Ren and the First Order. The two form a quick alliance and Poe gives him the name of Finn. During their escape, the fighter goes down on Jakku and Poe was presumed dead. A young woman, Rey, a scavenger living on Jakku comes across Finn, and the droid, BB8, who belonged to Poe. BB8 has a portion of a map that is believed to have a map containing where Luke is hiding. Kylo discovers this and is seeking the robot and the woman who has been avoiding him protecting the droid.
Along the journey, Rey, Finn and BB8 find the Millennium Falcon and ultimately Han and Chewie. Han takes them to an old friend where Rey is drawn to a strange box in the basement to discover Luke's lightsaber. Kylo finds them, fighting commences and he takes Rey. She has seen the map, though partially. Han is reunited with Leia, C3PO and they head to the rebel base to gather facts and plan an attack. Finn is determined to save Rey no matter what. R2D2 is in the base but has been in low power mode since Luke disappeared. Poe survived from earlier and helps plan the attack.
The rebels devise a plan and they set off to take action. Leia asks Han to bring their son back with him. They infiltrate the new "Death Star" and have the shield lowered. Rey, after being tortured by Kylo, discovers what she was told about the force is true. She escapes her restraints using the force. Han, Chewie, Finn and Rey set explosives.
Han faces his son, Kylo Ren, only to be betrayed by him. 😭😭😭😔😭😔😭😔😭😔 Chewie goes ballistic and kicks ass. They disabled the weapon but the rebel pilots finish it off. Finn and Kylo fight but Finn is seriously injured. Rey and Kylo fight and she finally believes in the force fully. She defeats him but only disarms him. (Not literally like Anakin or Luke) She retreats the "Death Star" and takes Finn. You assume Kylo survives/get off the thing before it blows up.
Rey, Chewie, and Finn return to the rebel base, morn the loss of Han and then suddenly, R2 wakes from his low power mode. He has the rest of the map from which BB8 had been given. Rey promised Finn, who is in a coma, that she will see him again. Rey goes on a mission in the falcon with Chewie, R2 and C3PO to find Luke.
Tada, Luke.
Despite the outcome of Han, I enjoyed the movie. Though it's a continuation, in a lot of ways it is a remake of sorts. Really though, it's how it needed to be for the plot to work, and it's a natural flow or progression of things. Good vs evil and dark vs light. I loved the jokes, references to the original movies and of the saber duels. It's dark and kept my attention. I knew Han was doomed when Leia told him to bring their son back. I kept hoping I was wrong though.
Adios Han, it's been un-real. Lol. May the force be with you. Chewie, hang in there buddy.
My theory is that Rey is Luke's daughter.
