The Oscar "Selfie" Heard 'round the globe

Mar 04, 2014 14:15

Ah, The Oscars. The one time of year I get overly excited about celebrities. I enjoy seeing my favorite celebrities and the general "buzz" around it all. I am glad that The Oscars have transformed into a bit of a entertainment show. I remember as a child in the 80's, The Oscars were boring and a truly just an awards show with no "wow" factor.

If there is one thing to always be counted upon, it's Ellen's knack for entertaining us. She's innovative, fun and spontaneous. So, when she approached Meryl Streep and Liza Minnelli I figured some fun would happen. I have read articles both during and after The Oscars complaining about the "skits" during the ceremony. What is wrong with this? Where is the "rule" that an awards ceremony has to be boring and solely about the awards?  The point of awards is to celebrate the movies and actors, right? Why not have some fun.

Let's face it, the majority of us who watch these award ceremonies want to see the actors/actresses we like the best. We care about the winners of course but it is fun to see the celebrities in a different light. We enjoy seeing them dressed up, with their loved ones and relaxed. There is nothing wrong with having some fun while at an awards ceremony, in my opinion.

After all, 2013 was the year of the selfie, right? The Oscars are a celebration of "some" of the best movies of the year (money and critic wise anyways - Don't get me started there). Why not have fun with the year's biggest stories and such?

I love the fact that Ellen took down Twitter. I had no idea there was already a "most retweeted" picture prior to Ellen's. I was tweeting at the time also and realized it had gone down. That itself is the power of the social media.  I saw this article about who actually owns this selfie picture. Any photographer or graphical artist knows about photography laws. Just ask my semi-famous Wedding Photographer friend, coreyann (www.coreyann.com) She will set you right on all things photography and rights. :)

Besides the selfie, the pizza for the whole crowd was pretty great as well. That's the spontaneousness of Ellen. I am sure she planned it out with The Oscar people before hand of course. In contrast, The Golden Globes have a dinner before (or during?) the show. I think the majority of us forget by the time of the show, it's 5:30 or so in California. I thought the pizza thing was hilarious and so Ellen.

The fun did not end with these two things. Poor John Travolta. I have mad love for him but come on, he had to have known who he was introducing even if he couldn't read the teleprompter. I give him props though, he said the wrong name (Adele Dazeem instead of Idina Menzel) flawlessly without a hitch and no laugh. He did not even attempt to correct himself.

Idina Menzel, a wickedly talented entertainer sings "Let it Go" from Disney's animated movie "Frozen". on The Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon.

On the Red Carpet, Benedict Cumberbatch photobombed epically. Can this man be any cooler? WOW

JLaw tripped once again. At least it wasn't on or around the stage this year. Who knew she had to watch our for Caution cones. lol.

Pink did an outstanding job singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. She rocked that red dress too.

The memorandum missed some noteworthy people, like James Avery and Corey Monteith. They did however, mention Sarah Jones. She was a camera assistant who died while on set in a train accident. She was a member of The Vampire Diaries set crew. Ian Somerhalder and other stars of the show quickly showed their support of this accident and "Slates for Sarah Jones"  was started on Facebook in support of awareness and remembering her.

Here's the Oscar Memorandum Photo gallery.

Last but certainly not least. LEONARDO DICAPRIO. Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo FREAKING DiCaprio. Really? How can this man NOT have an Oscar?   #GiveLeoAnOscar
