About the Mark Watches Meltdown...

I didn't join the Buffy fandom online until after the show ended, so I missed those infamous fandom wars. Not at all sorry about that.

I only recently started reading Mark Watches (off and on as I could) and enjoyed it. It was fun re-experiencing the show for the "first" time vicariously through Mark and those commenting. I usually didn't have ( Read more... )

I was banned a long time ago for telling Arctic Hare she was a bully, and have recently come to the conclusion that it was the best thing that ever could have happened

You too? I was banned a few weeks ago for telling her to stop being so fucking self-righteous and preachy, after she attacked another poster telling them to shut up and stop being 'fucking ignorant' and 'check their privilege' because they dared to politely disagree with her opinion that Xander stopping Willow in Grave was about a "straight man saving the world from an evil lesbian" (the poster told her they thought it was a beautiful story about friendship that had nothing to do with people's gender and sexual orientation, which caused all this ire and ranting on her part). Then when I e-mailed Mark to ask what had happened, he attacked me telling me that I had offended Arctic Hare telling her that her IDENTITY as a queer person DIDN't MATTER and tried to show her my superiority (lots of capslock, of course). WTF? Oh, and he ended it with "go away". I sent him one last goodbye e-mail where I told him exactly what I thought of him and AH, that they were entitled hypocritical bullies (and I used capslock :) ).

Like you, now I'm so happy I got banned before all this started, it gave me reason not to go to that blog anymore, at all. I don't want to give him any more traffic.

Oh, yeah - I was told I needed to stop being the queen of the culture of entitlement, and that I was way out of line and I was abusing Mark - just abusing him!. And this was before the explosion Mark does not feel any need to apologize for, I assume I was also the evil person he sought to engage with since I had a history of damaging posts. Because a friend and I said we thought Mark didn't really get Spike and we used Rot13 for that. It was almost as big a blow up as the other one - but it was more targeted.

I did apologize - which probably mad things worse - but the apology was for me. His bat, his ball - I have enough of a sense of honor that I didn't like my part in the whole thing. He never replied.

I have really icky feelings after reading things there and seeing the turmoil caused not by the show, but by the weird that can be the interwebz.

Absolutely. There are many great things that have come from the Internet, but the weirdness is definitely not one of them. ::sigh::

Anybody watching this for the first time and blogging about it who isn't ... quite so... strange? Hmmm, maybe I'll put the question out there, see what I come up with.

elisi mentioned Arbitrar of Quality. I found links to those here, courtesy of the lovely moscow_watcher.

redeem147 also recommended Nikki Stafford's Buffy Rewatch.

Let me know if you find anything else! :-)

Okay...what? I'm all for varying interpretations even if I don't necessarily agree, but I can't wrap my head around this one.

Then when I e-mailed Mark to ask what had happened, he attacked me telling me that I had offended Arctic Hare telling her that her IDENTITY as a queer person DIDN't MATTER and tried to show her my superiority (lots of capslock, of course).

That's too bad. How sad to be so easily triggered that "fair and reasonable" totally flies out the window.
