The above rumor started, acc'g to David Tennant, in interviews with Tom Baker in the '80's, when he announced that he was leaving.
Typical Tom: "wind the press up." And then the rumor was recycled every six months. :-)

Tennant was also very sarcastic about Hollywood producers he'd met who said they "loved the show" (DW) when they hadn't seen any of it. And more politely, how "cut-throat" the entertainment industry is in the States.
Ah but his part in "Fright Night" was originally played by Roddy McDowell. He loved that.
