Цвета имеют явную эмоциональную окраску. Не удивительно, что различные цвета входят в состав выражений, которые образуют, так сказать, colourful language. Многие английские выражения нам легко понятны, к примеру:

like a red rag to a bull
blue with cold
to go blue (посинеть, напр., от удушья)
the black sheep of the family
white with anger/ fear
to roll out the red carpet
white lie («святая» ложь)
purple in the face
purple with rage

Вряд ли вызовет затруднение понимание следующих предложений:

You have green fingers. (Если у Вас растет все, что посадите)

I was completely green when I first started my own business, and I had to learn some important lessons the hard way (green = naive).

At last we have been given the green light to go ahead with the excavation.

You can talk to her until you are blue in the face but she won’t change her mind. (По-русски: спорить с ней до посинения)

The government has produced a black list of environmentally damaging products.

The archeologist was seriously injured when his car spun off the road at a notorious black spot.

If you do that again, I’ll beat you black and blue (наставлю тебе синяков. Аналогично: black eye - фингал).

А вот дальше уже интересней:

white elephant - это дорогостоящий и абсолютно бесполезный проект:
That office block they built has turned out to be a real white elephant. They spent the earth on it and it’s still unoccupied.

Ваш банковский счет (bank account) может быть in the black, если на нем есть деньги, или in the red, если Вы должны банку больше, чем у Вас есть.

Говоря о бюрократических проволочках, упоминают red tape:
We would like to send the fossils out of the country for expert examination, but there is a lot of red tape involved in the procedure.

Earl was caught red-handed taking the money. (Его поймали на горячем)

Любопытно слово browned off = fed up (inf.)
They are getting browned off by the situation.

Счастливая полоса - это purple patch:
Steve’s purple patch continued with a second victory on Tuesday.

out of the blue = unexpectedly:
The decision came out of the blue.
У нас гром среди ясного неба, а у них молния:
Was this money a bolt from the blue or did you know you were going to get it?

once in a blue moon - очень редко:
Fossils of this type are rare; in fact they are only found once in a blue moon.
We used to be good friends but now I only see him once in a blue moon.

Пойти по кабакам - это to paint the town red

to see red = to become very angry:
When I see people dropping litter in the street, it really makes me see red.

Орать со всей дури = to scream blue murder:
The sales figures are down again and the boss is screaming blue murder.

Зеленеть от зависти:
His sister’s financial success and luxurious lifestyle makes him green with envy.
