5 films that should have been franchises

SERENITY
(Obviously.) I know we were very lucky to get even one movie, considering that Firefly was cancelled after only 11 episodes on tv, but how awesome would it have been to get more! As it was originally created as a television series, the premise was designed to carry on and on.

THE INCREDIBLES
Superhero movies have always been the most obvious potential franchises. So why the hell didn't this one happen? Surely a sequel to The Incredibles would have made much more sense than a sequel to Cars.

MASTER AND COMMANDER:
THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
This one makes me sadder than any of the others on this list, actually. Such a great, gorgeous movie, nominated for a number of Oscars, including Best Picture, based on a series of 20 novels(!) by Patrick O'Brian. But, unfortunately, it was not a big enough box office success to warrant even one sequel, so that huge wealth of material leftover remains sadly unrealized on film.

DICK TRACY
While not a superhero, Dick Tracy was still a hero of comics, so the franchise potential is just as obvious as with any Superman/Batman/Spider-man/etc. Indeed, a sequel actually was planned, but controversy over the film rights derailed any hope of production. Suck.

BULLITT
A cool, urban crime thriller starring Steve McQueen at the height of his career (and featuring the most famous car chase sequence ever made) - who wouldn't have wanted to see more of that?
