Greetings from Europe!!
Sally, Dad, and I are in Salzburg, Austria right now with Dad's students from Hopkinton. So far it has certainly been an adventure. On our flight over, we stopped for two days in Iceland, rode Icelandic horses, went to a lava bed that's been filled with runoff from a geothermal power plant (special healing properties in this water, so they say), and, I must say, ate the most expensive food of our lives. People do not go to Iceland for it's dining pleasures. But that just made the transition to Germany easier. :)
We spent a couple of days in Saarlouis, Germany, which is in the west, bordering on Luxembourg and France. It is lovely, and the weather has been beautiful, bordering on too hot, and one thing Europeans do not do is ventilate. i can understand not wanting to waste electricity on fans or ac, but they dont even open the windows. today we visited an old salt mine outside of salzburg and hiked around in the mountains. we also visited all the sites from 'the sound of music.' after the hiking, the best part was definitely the elaborate ice cream sundaes we ordered at an outdoor cafe. i would use an exclamation point here, but the computer doesnt want to let me.
sorry this message is so short, i am in an internet cafe and have a time limit. more to come as soon as i have more time.
much love,
anna
