In her eyes
Evading stars
Flickered through smoky clouds
of red ash
With the promise of solitude
That intrigued and enticed
Romantic inclination
It was a risk that drove her desire
While he was away
Unencumbered by thoughts of home
Resting on grey planes of remorse
Once calling out and then faceless
Attachment bridged the gap between her heart and his heart
And so she fell distracted by peonies:
Their round folds of citrus colour
Splashing in window panes and corners of rooms
She would arrange them methodically
Morning and afternoon
When the Sun shone its brightest
And filled her with a golden apathy
It dawned on her to retreat from advances
And let the sun, song and colour engulf her totality
With disillusioned contempt
Of winter nights without light
She recalled herself as a child
Restless in dark sheets
As a black sky of magnificent size
Veiled across the moon
Making the whole world still
On nights like these she became mournful
She’d lay awake and imagine herself disappearing in shadows
To the point of non-existence
As she grew older she let go of childhood fantasies
Yet the fear still remained
A sense of darkness and impending disaster
would swarm her
If the moon hid away
Yet in the morning all would feel calm
Colour would flush her muted face
Until she was pink with the excitement of dawn again.
