It's sunday afternoon. My partner has buggered off into town to buy me a birthday present (cutting it a bit fine I'd say but we'll see) and I'm sitting in my living room pretending that the flat is not desperately untidy and in need of cleaning. So what do I do? Well as you can tell, I did not rush to the cupboard to reach for the vacuum cleaner, nor did I don a pair of marigolds and start scrubbing the bathroom, I switched my laptop on and started surfing the net. And I'm wondering...how much of people's time spent on the internet is due to procrastination? I reckon with me it's about 80%. Yes I do use it for the purposes of gleaning information but all too often I merely use it as a distraction; a means to pass time. There is of course nothing wrong with that, unless you have a deadline to meet or you're liable to break your neck while tripping over your various possessions decorating your floor. Surfing the net is relaxing, time goes fast and if you're nosy like me, it's great fun. However did we manage without it? I cannot imagine doing my job (a research-based post) in the dark old days. Next to the wedgie, the internet must surely be the most important invention of the 21st century...
There was no point in this lj entry; next time I promise to keep my more banal thoughts to myself. That's the downside to the internet - we try in vain to legitimise and gravitise our mundane ponderings by 'publishing' them. Better to keep them in really.
