Under the influence

I realised to some surprise that I have not yet mentioned music in my live journal. This is a surprise because music is the single most important aspect of culture in my life. If I had to put books, music and films in order, it would be a close call between music and books but the former would win out. The reason? Music is essential to my soul. If ( Read more... )

Saw them in concert a month or so ago. Unfortunately they were a real disappointment - too many stadium intros and Karen O seemed too much off her nut to be able to keep time with the rest of the band. Nevermind, still gotta love 'em. I'm sure they'll sound great on the slopes!
And yes, there is a definite Siouxsie influence (especially early Siouxsie like Nicotine Stain, Carcass etc) but I think they're more consistently good (catchier tunes!).

Will try and check it out on digital. Our equivalent of indie 103.1 is probably XfM 104.9 which is also worth trying - a good mixture of UK and US bands, mainly indie-rock.

I have very few female artistes in my collection, with Nancy Sinatra leading the pack. Perhaps I need educating?

I wonder why it is that female solo artists rule these days when they couldn't sell a thing in the 70's and 80's? I haven't got any objections for heavens sake, but it is a strange shift.

Well I guess in the 70s and 80s you had Madonna, Kate Bush, Diana Ross, Alison Moyet, Carly Simon, Cher, Aretha Franklin, to name a few. I think there is a greater proliferation of girl bands now (most of them bad) but not necessarily female singers.

Yes; the thing I was remembering was the British female solo artist's failure to get a number one for years beyond measure. The actual years I can't recall.

That's a pretty good list :)

I say yeah to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs too. I was at that gig... Karen looked like a Dr Who monster on acid (and I don't mean that figuratively either.. I think she might actually have been on acid).
