Ennis asks Jack out on an 'adult' date...

Sunday night. Greene Turtle sports bar. It’s still pretty warm this evening, so I sit outside under a green umbrella and wait for him. I’m way early, but I don’t care. I nurse a cold beer in my hands, rubbing the condensation off with my thumbs. I try not to look at my watch every thirty seconds. I don’t know why I’m so nervous - it’s just a drink after all.

The anticipation makes me breathless. I’m pretty sure he’ll show, I’m not worried about that. It’s more that I don’t know where this is going. This budding friendship between us. I know what I want. I want him. He makes my insides shiver. It’s been forever since I felt this way.

A few minutes later I see him pull into the parking lot. I force myself to stay seated as he climbs out of his jeep. Oh man he looks good. He’s wearing worn denim jeans and a long sleeved brown shirt. I take a deep breath and wave casually.

He spots me immediately and strides over, almost jogging in his haste to reach me. “Sorry I’m late,” he says, noting my half empty bottle of Bud Light.

“You’re not. I’m early.”

“Oh. Ok.” Ennis hovers awkwardly, like he doesn’t know whether to sit or stand.

I tilt my head towards the door, “shall we go inside?”

“Sure.”

We sit side by side at the bar, legs splayed, knees millimetres apart. Large TV screens dominate the walls around us. Above our heads the Ravens are playing the Steelers.

“Do you watch?” I gesture at the football game with my beer bottle.

Ennis nods, taking a long swallow of his own Bud, “when I can.”

“Me too. Bobby loves it. Thinks he can give Joe Flacco a run for his money.”

Ennis smiles, “he’s probably right.”

“Yeah.” I catch Ennis’ eye and take another mouthful of beer. I see him watch my throat as I swallow. I shift on my chair and brush our knees together. “You hungry?” I ask.

Even in the dim light I see Ennis’ eyes flood with darkness. He wipes his mouth on the back of his hand. “I could eat.”

“The chicken wings are good here. Want to share a basket?”

“Sounds good.”

I order. We sit and watch the football for a while, both of us picking at the labels on our beers. There is so much being unsaid. The signs are subtle, but they are definitely there. I figure that Ennis is a man of action rather than words.

I’m happy to wait. I’m just hoping I don’t have to wait too long to know for sure.

A/N - for those who are unaware, Joe Flacco is the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens.
