The last 'date' was cut short by Bobby accidentally skewering himself...

We get there early today. Bobby is keen to make up on the time he missed last week. I know how he feels.

The sandbox is empty as we approach the playground and I find myself searching the crowds for the familiar blond head.

He’s not here yet.

I sit on my favorite bench and put the spare coffee down next to me. Ok, so he’ll know that Starbucks didn’t mess up my order again, but whatever. I don’t care.

The minutes tick by and every time a new car crunches into the parking lot my heart jumps into my mouth. Every time I have to swallow down disappointment when it’s not him. I finish my coffee and check my watch again. It’s half an hour after we usually arrive and the spare latte is getting cool pretty fast. I tell myself that he will be here, he will. I stand up and pace around, trying to keep calm and not feel so damn stupid. Bobby is oblivious to my fretting and is back on the climbing wall, injuries from last week long forgotten.

Another crunch of tires jerks my attention back to the parking lot. My stomach tightens as I see a jeep arrive. He’s here.

I let out a long breath and can’t help but smile in relief.

He gets out and sets the two blonde girls free. They run straight over to the sandbox. Junior gives me a quick wave as she passes. I turn back to see her dad walking towards me, a brown paper bag in his hand.

“Sorry we’re late, Jack.” he says. His dark eyes catch mine anxiously.

“No problem,” I reply. I nod at the white cup on the bench. “Coffee might be cold though.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Another wrong order?”

I laugh. “No. They got it right this time.”

“You bought it for me?”

“Sure.” I shrug casually.

He flushes a little and clears his throat. “Thanks. I… um brought something too. Cookies. Thought you and Bobby might like some.” He holds up the bag.

Oh yeah. Coffee and cookies works for me.

“How’s the hand?”

It takes me a second to realise he is talking about Bobby. “Oh, he’s fine, thanks. They bounce back pretty well at that age.”

He nods. I smile.

He holds out his hand. “Ennis.”

I blink. ”Ennis? Your name is Ennis?”

“Uh huh.”

I clasp his hand tightly. It’s warm and dry and feels mighty nice next to mine. “Pleasure.”
