I ended up seeing it by myself as the friend I saw the tour with was busy, and another friend I wanted to bring with me couldn't go. Nobody cared that I was under 18, but that was probably because very few people there were seeing the movie to begin with.
- It wasn't as gore-y as I expected. True, it showed Sweeney killing a lot of people, but that was to be expected, and you kind of got used to it after a while.
- Pirelli's death was shocking in that he wasn't killed the first time, and that Toby was in the room when his hand twitched. In regards to Sweeney's actually finishing him off, I like many others was forewarned and expected it to be.....scarier? Oh and, Sacha Baren Cohen as Pirelli? It amused me.
- Johnny Depp's singing sounded like he was trying to be some sort of angsty male pop star. Not that it didn't work at some parts, it just mostly wasn't for me. I kind of warmed up to him as the movie went along, though.
- Johanna's voice was weak, but considering that they cut most of her vocals she was fine. Very pretty, actually.
- Helena Bonham Carter's voice was quite airy, but it worked in that there was no trying to decieve us into believing it was something it wasn't. Does that even make sense?
- I don't get why everybody likes Laura Michelle Kelly so much. I also saw her in Lord of the Rings and didn't see/hear anything spectacular. Tobias was cute, though. Well, for a little kid.
- Alan Rickman's Judge Turpin was too much like his Snape. I also got the feeling that he can't really sing. His singing voice was almost exactly like his speaking voice, only more musical. In retrospect, I'm glad that the Judge's version of Johanna was cut. That would've been creepy.
- On a similar note, if Sweeney and Turpin weren't singing about women in Pretty Women, that scene would seem vaguely homoerotic. Turpin was just so relaxed and....oh, just see it for yourselves.
- The colour resolution of the film was generally very dark and depressing.
- During A Little Priest some people actually laughed at some of the funny bits so I guess the sick humour isn't entirely lost.
- By the Sea was hilarious. Mrs. Lovett was just so happy and Sweeney was so miserable. I spent most of that part laughing at the look on his face. That and there actually was some colour there, which was a welcome change. One last thing: LOL at the striped bathing suit thing.
- The chair Sweeney built looks pretty awesome. As do his razors, for that matter.
- I love how Sweeney was slitting all those men's throats while singing Johanna. Apparently thinking about your daughter and mass-murdering go hand in hand.
- Leaving Mr. Fogg to the mercy of the inhabitants of his insame asylum does make more sense than Johanna killing him with the scissors. As does Judge Turpin ensnaring both Lucy and Johanna, but the changes are rather irksome nonetheless.
- I thought earlier on that God, That's Good! was cut, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw that it wasn't.
- I think that the lush orchestrations are a large part of why I don't hate the movie. The music itself is just so pretty, abet slower in some parts than the original score, that it made up for people not being the greatest of singers.
- Not While I'm Around was so precious! Toby is a pretty good singer, and you could honestly believe that he thought Mrs.Lovett to be like a mother to him.
- The fast-forwarding effect used to represent Sweeney's walk to fleet Street was pretty neat.
- The cockroaches on the table during The Worst Pies in London amused me, as did Johnny Depp's little mannerisms regarding the pies.
- Epiphany was brilliantly put together. I especially enjoyed the end, where you see Sweeney on the street and then it turns out that he's just in his room all along.
- The finale was great. Johanna hiding in the chest certainly made sense. Sweeney's finding out that the beggar woman was his wife by the light of the opened oven was an interesting plot twist.
- Mrs. Lovett's death-by-oven didn't really freak me out. But then, I knew it was going to happen.
- Tobias looked so...vindictive when he killed Sweeney. Also, I would have never thought that Toby would have used the sewers, even when Todd and Lovett were looking for him there.
General consensus: I enjoyed it. Yes, the singing isn't the greatest, but it's good considering that this is a movie.
Plus, while everything was rather gloomy that was to be anticipated coming in.
I asked my Dad if we could buy the DVD and his answer was yes. YAY! Not to mention that by his estimation it should be released rather soon, given that most people don't want to see it in theatres. That is unfortunate, but with luck I could end up getting it as a birthday present.
I'll probably end up seeing it at least another time on the big screen, since the friends I mentioned haven't seen it yet. I'm up for it, so it's all good.
