Marilyn Monroe by Ed Feingersh
Maison des Etats-Unis, 6 rue Cassette, Paris - until September 7, 2011
Photos taken by Ed Feingersh, for the magazine Redbook. Marilyn had just moved from California to New York, after creating her own production studio. She was trying to establish herself as a serious actress, taking classes as the Actor's Studio.
Chief editor Robert Stein asked Ed Feingersh to do a photo report on Marilyn as a symbol of a young active woman, an example of modernity for his magazine readership.
The most famous shot of the series, it wasn't even published by RedBook.
But it was later used as publicity by Chanel (it's truly a Chanel cologne bottle that she's holding), and published on the cover of Playboy Japan
Ed Feingersh asked Marilyn to go in the subway for that picture.
It was the first time she went in the NY subway.
Taken on the roof of Hotel Ambassador in New York
Her face is amazingly beautiful and luminous, I can see why she fascinated so many people
