"I'm not giving you what you want - I'm giving you what you need."

Joss Whedon famously said that to his fans when they rebellod ove some or other decision he made as a showrunner. But then again, Joss is awsome and can afford to say this.

Can everyone else?

There's a very good article in The Guardian - The power Of Heroes worship.

(thanx to dcwash for the link)

It's about how much do the fans opinions influence a shows plot. And should tptb listen.

An extract:
The intensity of the relationship between fans and writers has changed the way in which writers work, Klemmer adds. "I think many writers are stubborn and inclined to think 'I'm not going to give you that just because you want it' but obviously you're not writing in a vacuum - you can't completely ignore your audience or they'll stop watching."

What do you guys think? Is Joss right? Or Kring (mentioned in the article)?

This totally reminded me of the whole thing with Stargate Atlantis. On one hand tptb got rid of Elizabeth Weir and despite fans outrage didn't bring her back, on the other hand you have Carson Beckett who did get back on the show. Very much because of fans efforts. So... was the outcry for Carson bigger and louder then for Elizabeth? Or was it something else...

The whole thing with Sara in Prison Break would apply here as well, right? Or was her character always supposed to return in season4?

There are actually many other examples I could think of. *points to icon* Interesting.

tv shows, joss whedon is my master now, random
