Universe is a go!

Well... it didn't take them a lot of time, that's for sure. It kinda make you wonder if they cancelled atlantis just so Universe could get started. Brad Wright himself said that the cancellation was a mutual decision between him, NBC and SciFi, so obviously he didn't fight very hard to keep team!Atlantis on the small screens. Wich makes me kinda sad.

But then again... maybe Wright did the best possible thing being faced with resistance to renewing the show he decided to make a deal that keeps the franchise alive with Universe, and the movie thrown in as a nod to the fans? We don't know. And seriously, I'm positive there will be at least one more Atlantis movie after this one.

Also, I've seen that the campaing to save Atlantis is already well under way. It's nice to see that at least the fans are trying... even though I firmly believe that there is NO WAY Atlantis is ever coming back for season 6. But is is very good for the prospect of more Atlantis movies after this first one.

Now to Stargate Universe... here's the premise, if you haven't seen it already:

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI said. "Universe will continue the Stargate legacy of vibrant storylines and compelling adventures, but will re-invent the format in a whole new way."

Universe will attempt to appeal to a broader audience, drawing new viewers into the Stargate world. The show will be "a little more character-based, a little less rooted in a sci-fi mythology," co-creator Brad Wright told GateWorld. "It really does come down to characters and stories that are engaging, and that people want to see -- that they feel like they haven't seen before."

Part of the new focus is a deliberate attempt to bring in younger viewers to watch Stargate Universe. "This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation," SCI FI president Dave Howe told The Hollywood Reporter. "We really don't want to be more of the same. It's going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe."

Things I have a problem with - more character based, less sci-fi mythology, attempt to bring in younger viewers - kinda sounds like BSG, but then this whole "bringing the younger viewers" makes that impossible. BSG isn't really for kiddies. And really how much younger are they going for? Wasn't Stargate already like PG or something? And I don't want it to become too serious and too dark. I mean, the reason I fell in love with both shows is the humor. You gotta keep that! Also "the team" feeling. Those two things are just a MUST for me.

Besides these concernes, the premise itself sounds interesting and promising to me. I'm VERY interested to see how it will actually turn out. Can't wait to see the 2 hour premiere!

Some of the interesting articles I read about the subject: Gateworld: Stargate Universe Has A Go, SyFyPortal - New Series, Stargate Universe Waiting In The Wings and (I REALLY recommend this last one, it's awsome)Chicago Tribune - Stargate franchise Continues with Universe.
