It's been a little over a week in my brand new apartment. The walls are so blindingly white you wouldn't believe it. My parents said it was small; they've obviously never lived in a dorm. This place is a palace by comparison. The countertops/cupboards/flooring/carpeting are all new and smell of fresh plastic. Currently I have a bed, a dresser (that was mysteriously left in the place by the last inhabitor), some fans, my clothes, a desk, a TV, and a television stand that I got from St. Vinnie's for $12. Absolutely no seating of any kind. ha.
As a New House present I was able to entertain Dan for a few days (and glorious nights).
Let me tell you about Daniel...
We met by chance. And by chance, I mean online. And by online I mean I attacked him on Match.com. Is that not a strange thing to admit? Even I'm a little shocked by it, almost two months later. After Wes, I wanted a new start. I wanted someone to take me out to dinner, to show me a good time. And Dan's profile looked promising; a smart guy, good education, a little on the nerdy side.
I was in for something completely different than expected.
Dan is 24. He's about 5'10, a bit on the chubby side, with a mop of unruly black curls that are nice to run my fingers through. He wears glasses, shaves occasionally, dons hawaiian shirts whenever possible. But I think the best thing about him (besides his hair) is the way he treats me. He looks at me with these big green eyes and he smiles a goofy smile. He puts his arms around me and never wants to let go. He tells me how beautiful I am, and how lucky he is to have me. Dan is a man who has had his heart broken in half, had given up on himself. I promised myself that I wouldn't go into this wanting to save him; that doesn't work.
Our first date was...peculiar. He lives in Boyne City and drives to Tawas every once in a while to play D&D with some high school friends. Gathering up the courage along this route, he managed to stop in to 7-11 to visit me. I was surprised by how jovial he appeared.
He smiled, bought a Slurpee, babbled a bit about his drive. Later that night, I was happy to find an e-mail asking me to lunch the following day in Tawas. So, I met him at the Shell station in town, and we walked the pier, walked the beach a bit, got some ice cream. The whole time I felt very...detached. Dan wouldn't even really look at me for too long, which was strange. So I left that day feeling saddened that there weren't any sparks.
How wrong was I. In fact, Dan later told me that he'd wanted for nothing more than to kiss me goodbye, but he was so rusty and out of practice he had no idea how/when/where/or why.
And so, here we are a month later, a little awkward, but completely right for each other.
