Volunteers Needed for Day of the Dead Ceremony at Forest Hills Cemetery
Friday, November 2nd
Please help us make this community celebration a success!
Volunteers are needed from 4 to 6:15 pm and from 6 to 8:15 pm to staff the event and from 2 to 4 pm to help with set-up
The Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican celebration of remembrance. It is held outdoors here at Forest Hills Cemetery. We expect 300 people to attend this annual community event organized by La Pinata to honor the spirits of ancestors and nature.
Day of the Dead
Tzompantli
Join us for a traditional Mexican celebration of remembrance co-sponsored by Latin American folkloric performance group La Pinata. Based on the ancient traditions of Mexico's indigenous peoples who believed that the souls of the dead return each year to visit their families, the Day of the Dead celebrates the continusou cycle of life and death, embracing cultures from all throughout the Americas. Enjoy a program of music and dance as individuals bring offerings of photos, flowers, mementos, and traditional skull-shaped sugar candies to place on a decorated candle-lit altar for those departed loved ones.
Dress warmly. Bring a flashlight. Bilingual: English/Spanish. Admission: Free
Volunteering with event set-up
Please arrive at 2:00 pm for instructions and directions. Set up tasks will include placing directional signage at several locations and setting up tables and chairs. Your work will be completed by 4:00 pm.
Volunteering to staff the event
Two volunteer shifts are available: 4 to 6:15 and 6:00 to 8:15. The earlier shift involves welcoming and directing the public, handing out programs, and assisting at an activity table. The late shift involves guiding people exiting the cemetery and helping with clean-up.
To volunteer for this event, email Janice Farrell at JFarrell@foresthillstrust.org with your availability and volunteer preferences or call 617.524.3354. We especially need volunteers to staff the event; bring a friend!
Please dress warmly and bring a flashlight.
Your assistance makes this event not only possible, but a success!
