I recently finished reading Wideacre by Philippa Gregory, which is quite a long epic book, and have been trying to get into something new for the past week or so. I've already tossed aside Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and Lucifer's Hammer, by actually-I-don't-care-who-because-they-can't-write-their-way-out-of-a-paper-bag, in disgust. Life is just too short to read crappy, poorly-written or boring books.
kev_bot is currently working on a Top 50 greatest books ever list, but I can't read it because it's rife with spoilers: "you should totally read _______ because the end is so awesome when ___________ happens." (Okay, I'm exaggerating for effect, but my deep hatred of anything even remotely resembling a spoiler is keeping me away from Kev's posts.)
Anyway, point being: what have you read recently and enjoyed? (Without telling me the end!) I have a Barnes & Noble and a few Amazon gift certificates burning holes in my pocket, and the subway ride to work sure is long without a book in my handbag.
To give you an idea of my taste, I have already read the following books this year (unfortunately not exhaustive because I can't remember them all): Eragon (Christopher Paolini), Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini), Confessions of a Shopaholic (Sophie Kinsella), Anansi Boys (Neil Gaiman), The Other Side of the Story (Marian Keyes), Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs (Chuck Klosterman), The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Michael Chabon), and of course Wideacre (Philippa Gregory). I enjoyed all these books, for different reasons of course. If I'm not enjoying a book, I won't finish it, so the fact that I got to the end means that there was something worthwhile about each of them. (Edit: Ah! Also just remembered Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.)
Help me spend money on Amazon PLZ!
