Tonight I had most unexpected visitors.
Sensing cool air from an open window in the library, I quickly drew up the shades to close and lock the window, intent on keeping cold air out, and anything else unwanted. As I did, I immediately spied figures in the yard--our yard! Two nights before, I had been sleeping soundly, when a voice, which seemed to be near my bedroom window (under which I was sleeping) startled me awake. I couldn't make anything out, because there's an avacado tree in front of my window. My mom suggested that perhaps neighbors have been cutting a path through our yard to get to the nearby stores. (She had earlier found that a tangerine had been broken off a branch of her tree. She does keep a close eye on these things!) Hmmm.
Back to the figures. My first thought was, "Aha! These are the people cutting through our yard! Actually, it looks like they have just been hanging out here for some reason! What on earth!? How dare they! Look! They've been startled by me, and are running for cover!" Sure enough, they were running for cover, but as I peered closer, I noticed that they were shaped... like... cows!! Down the street past neighbors houses they ran. A bit fearful that they'd wreak havok somewhere, I called a neighbor who seems to be in the know. He answered promptly. "Oh, the cows are out?! Thanks!" He and a few of his family shone their flashlights around the yard. My brother Matthew and I went out. "They went that way!" (Pointing down the road.) He thanked me again, and off he went. A few minutes later the phone rang. It was the neighbor. "The people from the vacant house with all the cars left the gate open and the cows just went back through there. I just barb-wired it shut. Thank you for calling!"
The interlopers are gone. Yeehaw!
