He was fake. You don't need to react just because a fictional dog got hit with a case of rabies and had to be put down due to the potential threat it exposed the family to.

What happened to the dog is no more worse than what happens in reality.

I'm a realist here.

Would you've enjoyed the ending if Old Yeller lived only to infect the family with a debilitating mental disease which would kill them two to ten days after showing the first symptoms?
