I should have updated on Saturday, absolutely meant to. And then I did literally nothing at all - though I did get to catch up on the phone with
vala3, which is always nice. :-) After that I screwed around online most of the afternoon, then we hit the mall, which we haven't done in ages, and which was a misery because it was packed! And I mean packed like it was the week before Christmas or something - cars fighting for parking spots, the whole nine yards. I have no idea why there were so many people there. Ridiculous!
So we got what we went for - new pajamas for The Spousal Unit - then ate dinner at Ruby Tuesdays, and got the hell out of Dodge.
Yesterday was a little more productive in that I did a load of laundry. We went to Lowe's later in the day, then picked up dinner. I managed to get in a good walk after dinner, though it's still very humid and muggy and all around miserable walking weather.
All in all, it was kind of a wasted weekend, and I really don't know why because I have a lot that needs to get done. If TSU wasn't still recovering from surgery, we probably would have at least gone to the storage unit to get the Halloween decorations. But we didn't, so now we'll have to do that this coming weekend.
But I have to say I'm just not feeling the whole decorating thing this year, which is not like me. I'll get some of the outside decorations, but I'm just not going to bother inside this year. And after Halloween I'm going right into Christmas and skipping fall decorating altogether. I'll be traveling in mid-November, then TSU and I turn around and travel again in less than a month. That's going to interfere with the decorating and all around holiday schedule.
We did get an evite via Facebook - insert *eyeroll* here - from one of our nieces who is hosting Thanksgiving in Gainesville. I answered said evite with a "Maybe", because we really don't know if we'll be up for that much traveling on Thanksgiving day, especially now that it's the norm for people to do exactly that and the roads are jammed that day. A couple years ago we went to Tampa for Thanksgiving, and it was bad driving over, but returning later in the day was a bumper-to-bumper highway nightmare. That kind of white-knuckling stress really kills the whole holiday feel. Bad for the digestion too.
Okay, so the first week of new tv shakes out as follows.
The CBS Sunday Morning show actually had a piece on the brutal Sunday night tv schedule, and how ridiculous it is that everything airs on that night.
This Sunday Resurrection returned as did Revenge. I haven't watched Revenge yet, and we still have the season finale of Masters of Sex to watch as well as another episode of Manhattan.
I'm a little concerned about Resurrection because they appear to be doing exactly what Revenge did in its second season, and that's adding a conspiratorial faction who may or may not be behind what's happening in Arcadia. That kind of trope usually doesn't play well.
We did like Gotham and I think it's a great companion with Sleepy Hollow on Monday nights. But that means we have to continue to dvr The Big Bang Theory and either watch it at 10:00 or the next day. It becomes harder and harder to watch things next day, though, the more shows begin to return to the schedule.
I did try Scorpion off the dvr last week, and, you know, I liked the pilot better than I thought I would, but mostly because of the cast, which seems likable enough. So I may continue to dvr that one to see how it goes and if my interest in it is maintained.
I was right in my prediction that Forever is pretty much nothing like Pete Hamill's book. That being said, I liked it even though, other than the immortal character, there's not a lot of new territory being mined here. A poster on a board I frequent said it was like Highlander meets Elementary meets Castle, and she's not at all wrong. Still, it's got a charming cast, there is an interesting mystery with the other immortal who is stalking our hero, and I admit to being utterly charmed by Judd Hirsch playing the perpetually 35-year-old immortal's adopted son. So right now it's a keeper - for as long as the ratings hold out, of course.
I also tried The Mysteries of Laura twice solely because I love Debra Messing. And while it had its cute moments, the second episode was so badly written that I don't feel the need to keep trying.
I checked out the backdoor pilot of NCIS:NOLA last season almost solely because of Scott Bakula - who does a terrible NOLA accent, bless his heart ;) - and the New Orleans backdrop. I'm not a fan of the NCIS franchise AT ALL, but, as with Scorpion, the characters in the NOLA variation on a theme are likable enough, and it's New Orleans, baby! Hell, that's probably why I stuck with The Originals as long as I did once it started losing its way last season. So it's not one I'll cry if I forget to dvr it one week, but it's good for noise when I'm cooking. Plus, Bakula's character totally feels like he could swing both ways, so there's that. Probably a little bleed-over from his stint on Looking. Loves it! LOL!
I bailed on How to Get Away With Murder after ten minutes because I instantly hated all the student characters, which was the same problem one of the reviewers I read had with it as well. He thought none of the characters were likable, including Viola's, and, of the five minutes of her I saw, yeah, I didn't really like her either (though, of course, I like Viola Davis).
I'm really not a fan of Shonda Rhimes' brand of storytelling anyway. I hated Gray's Anatomy from the jump, do NOT understand for a second the appeal of Scandal, and now there's this one. So I can easily skip ABC's entire Thursday night line-up.
I also tried Black'ish, the new addition to the ABC Wednesday night comedy line-up, and it wasn't as funny as I wanted it to be. It's obviously trying to be the new Cosby Show for the 21st century, which is admirable, but the humor fell flat for me. Plus, I'm not happy that it takes Laurence Fishburn away from Hannibal, even though I believe he's supposed to still have some level of involvement (just not fulltime).
So right now of the new series that I've tried, I've liked Gotham and Forever, and sort of Scorpion and NCIS:NOLA. Whether I stay interested or not in any of them remains to be seen as the seasons play out.
