TV talk

I haven’t really discussed anything I’m watching lately, so let’s see how I do.

After talking about the Marvel ‘verse shakeup in the Cap movie with a couple of flisters, I pulled up the last three new episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on-demand and feel I’m now caught up enough to jump back in and watch to the end of the season. I do think they ( Read more... )

Potential mild GoT spoilers ahead!

Don't worry about Tyrion. I think he's clearly GRRM's favourite character and he always lands on his feet. Eventually:).

I agree with you about the torture porn - I fast forwarded through all those scenes last year. I was really surprised to see such an emphasis on it as it's only mentioned after the fact in the books - no in yer face stuff at all. I think it's the showrunners rather than GRRM who are driving it on the show.

What is true to the book, however, is the relentless fear, terror and general awfulness of life. Actually, the show IMO way soft-pedals the way that's portrayed in the books. There simply is no let-up - you spend the entire reading time absolutely terrified for every character you like because you know the axe could fall on any of them at any time, and there are very few light moments to leaven that. Normally, that's not my kind of thing at all - I can't read most Stephen King, for example, as I find the relentless buildup of dread too much to stand, and I normally won't watch or read anything with graphic violence. But despite that GRRM has me grabbed. It probably helps with the show that knowing what's coming allows me to close my eyes at strategic moments:).

Good to know!

That's what I heard after asking around, and so I have to wonder why the relentless attention paid to it on screen? I'm not so sure GRRM isn't part of the reason, though - I thought he was pretty hands on with the tv series. Maybe he's getting on screen what he was a little too timid to put in the books?

What is true to the book, however, is the relentless fear, terror and general awfulness of life.

You're absolutely right about that, and maybe that's another part of the reason I'm losing interest - because it's just so emotionally draining with little to no upbeat moments to balance it out.

I'll wait and see how I feel in a few more weeks. But I will continue to let The Spousal Unit vet the episodes for me. ;)
