It would have been way too easy for New Directions to win at Regionals, even without Sue trying to take them down - which in the end she didn't and was the only judge who was on their side. But, after all, the show has been picked up for two more seasons already, so winning this year would have taken all the wind out of the sails too quickly.
But, hell, I expected them at least to come in second. *waaaaaaaaah* Still, Sue Sylvester proves that she's the real heart and soul of McKinley High, and uses her last ounce of blackmail leverage with Figgins to grant another year reprieve to the Glee Club. It's a little frustrating that Sue has that whole other compassionate side to her, like how tender and loving she is with her sister, and, of course, being the one judge who ended up defending and voting for New Directions to win. Yet, no one ever gets to see that side of Sue. She and the writers keep it well hidden, though at least The Shue is starting to catch a glimpse of it.
But it makes sense to me that Sue would change her mind given what class snobs the rest of the celebrity judges were. In her own abrasive way, Sue has more in common with Shue, which he just started to realize with last week's episode, and that's how she really does everything she does to force her girls to excel so they can get scholarships to college when a lot of them would not go to college at all (like Brittany and Santana). And, as with any good family, Sue can belittle the kids all she wants, but she won't stand for outsiders to do the same, especially when she can all too easily relate to the not so privileged kids of McKinley High.
I know the Bohemian Rhapsody is one long-ass song, but that baby of Quinn's still popped out at warp speed. She was like a cat giving birth to kittens. I do appreciate that the writers didn't fall back on the schmaltzy trope of Quinn deciding at the last minute that she wanted to keep her baby. It was better that Quinn stuck to her guns and gave up Beth for adoption, though I think it's the height of hypocrisy for Shelby to adopt baby Beth when she so quickly decided she couldn't really be bothered to have anything to do with her own daughter when that child is reaching out to have a connection with her. I hope next season we get to see Rachel's two gay dads, because it would be nice to meet someone in Rachel's life who really loves her and wants her around.
Unpopular opinion time. I don't like Kurt a lot of the time, but his dad is awesome (no argument there). And Emma bores me. I don't give a damn who she dates. I'd rather see a lot more of Brittany and Santana next season (I think I read where both have been bumped up to regulars, and if so, yay!). And, of course, Puck has a much better voice than Finn - but I don't think there's any argument on that point either.
My, goodness, I haven't seen a body count that high on episodic television since The Sopranos went off the air. But, hey, it's been way too long since we've seen Raylan in full gunslinger mode, making those justifiable kills, so yay! for the body count. And thank goodness Raylan wasn't fooled by Arlo's act - I was starting to get worried after last week.
I'm content that we got to see how Boyd really was on the level regarding his religious conversion. With Walton Goggins becoming an overdue regular in season two, though, and given his crisis of new faith after his father slaughtered his flock, I have to think that may too quickly go by the wayside given his vengeance ride after the shooter that got away. Earlier in the season I was thinking like cousin Johnny, and believing that Boyd was possibly hiding behind the preacher act to dismantle his father's crime syndicate and take over the business on his own terms. But, as it turns out, it wasn't an act and Boyd was more interested in playing the vigilante than the crime boss. But with Bo and his closest soldiers dead now, there's a job opening for Big Bad White Trash Crime Lord in Harlan, Kentucky.
Though Bo Crowder's shoes will be big ones to fill. M. C. Gainey was awesome in the role! We'll have to wait and see where the writers intend to take Boyd next season.
Now that Winona and Gary are separated - on the heels of what surely must have been some awesome sex with Raylan - I assume there's a high probability that Raylan and Winona will get back together next season. I'm guessing that Ava will move out of Kentucky after this last incident with the Crowders, since she said she would. But, I don't know, I think I'd rather see Raylan playing the field with someone, or a few someones, he doesn't have baggage with, like he does with both Winona and Ava.
All in all, a justifiably awesome season finale.
