New Shows

Last year a little show on SciFi Channel caught my interest in it's second season, after a good friend gave me a little background on the show (thanks Deejay!! :D). Now I am all caught up on and eagerly awaiting season 3 of Eureka. I found out recently that I don't have to wait much longer... Season 3 starts Tuesday, July 29th (9/8c).

Eureka is a cute show with plenty of humor, some serious topics, interesting characters and cool inventions. Knowing the summer lineup should be starting soon... I searched the web and found this site with lots of spoilers from the title of the first 5 episodes and synopsis of each http://www.visiteureka.net/ Again SPOILER WARNINGS for that website, because headlines will give away spoilers for the season.

I'm glad this show, which I didn't even give a second thought about in season 1, is still on the air! It seems major networks rarely give new shows a chance to find their footing. In recent news ABC announced the cancellation of The Women's Murder Club. There wasn't a lot of advertising for the show which changed it's air date. It started airing on Fridays and after the writer's strike it aired it's 4 remaining episodes on Tuesday's without any real advertising as to it's return. It seemed more word of mouth than actual network notifications brought the viewers back to the right day and time. Again another friend suggested I try the show and with a little reluctance I gave it a try and I really enjoyed it, because of the quick wit and camaraderie of the shows main characters. Many fans are hoping the series 2nd season will get picked up by another network. *crosses fingers* ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX all made recent announcements of a number of shows being canceled after only one season.

There was another show years ago you might have heard of that started out slow, with low ratings it's first season. There was talk of canceling the show, but one person that made the decisions at the network (or really I think it was his wife) liked the show despite the low ratings and kept it on the air... and low and behold it was a huge success and still running reruns years later. Maybe you have heard of it... MASH.

What does the network people judge a new show by? Is it ratings only? Past examples seem to indicate low ratings in it's first season isn't enough to judge whether a show will succeed or not with the fans. How about looking into how the show was advertised. Where it was advertised. In today's society you have to compete with not only television shows among a sea of other channels, but also the internet. Word of mouth have turned two shows I didn't really think would interest me... into must see TV for me.
