I haven't made a post in a while. I've had a lovely weekend so far, and good performances both theatrical and musical, but I have a rant.
There's been a lot going on this past few weeks, culminating in my oldest son, James, flying out to Iraq yesterday for his second tour. This one is scheduled to be fifteen (15) months long. One year and three months. That'll be 2009, people. Most of the people I have day to day dealings with have no idea how long the tours are, although the papers and NPR have talked about it for months. Heck, my boss was surprised that they're still sending soldiers and Marines over to Iraq. What the hell? I'm getting to where I want to shout at people with those stupid yellow Support Our Troops magnetic tags on the cars. What support? The care they get if they have physical or mental injuries has been crap -- see the well documented reports in the Washington Post. There's US mercenaries out there, Blackwater being the most prominent, privatizing war, going on shooting sprees against the Iraqis with no punishment or retribution, and then the soldiers and Marines take the brunt of the Iraqis hatred and resentment. Doesn't anyone remember what was going on in 1776? Our Declaration of Independence listed King George's use of mercenaries as one of the justifications to revolt. Our government has been spying upon us and acting as if you are a traitor and soft on terrorism if you say they should follow the Constitution, which every single elected official has sworn to protect.

The New York Times has an excellent editorial today which begins "BUSH lies” doesn’t cut it anymore. It’s time to confront the darker reality that we are lying to ourselves."
We are becoming (have become?) the "good Germans" the nice people of Germany who managed to be utterly unaware of the Gestapo and what was going on with all those trains carting Jews and other "undesirables" into camps.
