five fancies

Do you think it's possible for your soul to be born after your body is? I was born in March, but I've never really felt like a March baby. March is an old woman, her joints stiff from the bitter winter cold. She wishes desperately to dance and play and sing like in her younger years, but her body is too worn to move like she used to ( Read more... )

In my country, we believe that we get new bodies. Our souls are just placed inside them. So who knows when your soul would have been born?

I'm a spring baby myself, to most of the people I know. But where I come from, there are two seasons, the hot season and the wet season, and I'm born in the wet season.

What a lovely idea! Wouldn't it be romantic to be the reincarnation of Guinevere or the Lady of Shallot? Do you think souls grow old, or are they suspended outside of time?

Where were you born?

I think that they grow older. And wiser. And eventually they want to do new things, or enlighten themselves. That's just how it works in my belief system, though.

I was born in south India in a place called Chennai, that used to be called Madras. On April 8th.

My soul must be very young, then. How are souls born?

You were born in the Indies? How exotic!

The conscious part could be very young. A soul isn't really born, but always exists. It develops the consciousness of its own life, and dwells in every heart; it is the master of all.

I don't think it's very exotic. But I did grow up there, so I suppose it wouldn't be to me. I'm living in America now, and am surprised every time a raccoon gets into my trash can. If not delighted.

That is such a beautiful philosophy.

No, I suppose it wouldn't be exotic to you. I'm sure some people find Nova Scotia very exotic, but it seems very dull and drab to me.

My grandmother taught it to me.

I've never been to Canada. But I hear it's dreadfully cold.

It's not cold all the time! At least, Nova Scotia isn't. Spring and summer are quite lovely, really.

Maybe I'll have to visit, then. Sometime when I return home. You seem to like it there, even if you call it dull and drab.

I do like it there, but I like it here so much more.

Do you? You're one of very few people to hold that view.

Why do you prefer it here?

This is the first place I could really call home.

You couldn't call home home?

There were places I lived, but that doesn't make them a home.

Why not?

It's not very interesting. Why don't you tell me more about your home? I've never met anyone from India before.
