Obama's moral responsibility

Apr 06, 2009 09:56

So, I owe Obama a small apology. I got a bit annoyed by the seemingly return of "America, world police", because over the weekend I saw various media report the following (both in dutch, and in english):

Obama: U.S. has 'moral responsibility' to help rid world of nuclear weapons

.. while conveniently leaving out the fact that he originally said:

"And as a nuclear power - as the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon - the United States has a moral responsibility to act. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it."

So it took 24 hours for a fair, balanced view without some press agency shortening the quote to a bite-size headline to reach me. Isn't that damaging? If I hadn't bothered to read the Volkskrant article (and why would I, knowing what the 'news' was already) I would have gotten a very slanted view of the facts.

Just one more example of how article length, sale-ability (easy catchphrases) seem to count for more than the actual content.
