Esposos Part 1 - in which SG1 travels to another planet and someone is injured. (another day at the office!)
“Brr!” Daniel turned the collar of his BDU coat up, thankful for the extra layers he had put on under it. T-shirt, thermal underwear, thick wool sweater, BDU top and coat… all buttoned up with a scarf wrapped around his neck. He had been warned that PX4-347 was a cold planet. The MALP had reported a current temperature around 25 degrees Farenheit and he didn’t intend to freeze. He checked his dark blue stocking cap and looked around.
“At least there’s no sand,” Carter muttered next to him as she took off her “Elmer Fudd” hat and pulled the flaps down so she could cover her ears. Daniel decided not to make a comment about hat hair and shifted his backpack up slightly.
“I like sand,” he said defensively. “At least then I’m warm!”
The Gate on this planet was situated on a large hill, or a small mountain, depending on your point of view. The trees grew in a circle around it, about 30 feet away from the Gate in all directions, giving them a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.
Jack and Teal’c were moving purposefully around the perimeter of the circle, making sure all was safe. To the north, a village was nestled in the valley perhaps a mile or two away and Teal’c had found the head of a trail that seemed to lead in its general direction.
“O’Neill, we should move down the trail. We are exposed here.” Jack nodded in agreement to the Jaffa’s comment.
“Yeah, they probably saw the Gate activate for miles around. There is just no cover up here! Carter, you’re on point.”
Daniel took a moment before going down the trail to look toward the village again and spotted movement. He grabbed Jack’s arm and pointed.
“Carter, hold up!” Jack called ahead and pulled out his field glasses. He squinted through them and passed them on to Daniel. Teal’c pulled out his own and took a look.
What appeared to be a group of people was moving slowly up the hill. Their bright clothing provided a contrast against the deep green of the needle-covered trees around them.
“See any weapons, T?”
“I do not. That does not mean there are none.”
“Hmmm. Daniel?”
“Uh, Jack, I am seeing one person who is using a cane and another who is being helped by someone. Elders, maybe? They don’t look too fierce to me.”
“Sir?” Carter’s voice floated up to them.
“Welcome wagon coming up the trail. They look like friendlies but keep your eyes open.” Jack called back to her and motioned Daniel ahead, walking about three feet behind him. Teal’c brought up the rear.
About two thirds of the way down the mountain, Daniel caught sight of the group.
The villagers were dressed in baggy clothes that appeared to be wool. The full pants were tucked into the tops of soft knee-high boots and the quilted coats came down past the hips. The only difference between what the men and women wore, Daniel observed, was their headgear. The men wore soft leather caps lined with fur and the women seemed to favor heavy, tightly knitted scarves.
The woman in front leaned on a cane as they waited for SG1 to come into the clearing. Her leathery face creased in a smile, showing a few gaps in her teeth. Her wrinkled hand held a walking staff but she didn’t lean on it much.
*Perhaps it’s ceremonial,* he thought. Behind her were six others, all smiling, but obviously deferring to the one they stood behind.
The woman called out a greeting in a strong raspy voice, ending with a question.
Daniel blinked. The language sounded familiar but it wasn’t one he actually knew. He smiled and made a half bow. Bowing seemed to pass for good manners in most cultures and couldn’t be considered threatening.
“We are from Earth and we come in peace, to explore your world and meet its people.”
The woman replied. Again, Daniel got the feeling that he had heard the language before, but was no closer to understanding it.
He turned to Jack. “I’ve got nothing. No idea what she said though they seem friendly.” The members of SG1 continued to face the group and smile.
“Uhm, I don’t want to step on your toes, Daniel,” Carter said hesitantly, “but it sounded like Inuit to me. I caught something about paradise, a ring and peace.”
“You speak Inuit?” Daniel asked her.
“You don’t?” Jack quipped at him.
“Well, Inuit isn’t exactly in my field of study, okay?” Daniel knew he sounded defensive but couldn’t help it.
Carter grinned and explained, "MyDad was stationed in Alaska for a while. I learned a little from the lady next door. I've forgotten most of it, though."
“Well then, Carter, you better give it a shot.” Jack motioned her forward.
"I'm Samantha Carter, I uh… Dammit Daniel, how do you do this?”
The lady furrowed her brow, then pointed to Carter. “Samantha Carter?”
Carter smiled in relief. “Yes.” She pointed to herself and repeated her name then pointed to the guys in turn, giving their names. The woman repeated them aloud and then gestured to the people behind her.
“Carlina,” she said, then began to introduce the people behind her, gesturing to each one. “Maril” was a heavier woman about Carlina’s age, with a face and demeanor that reminded Daniel of a Russian peasant woman. “Nynah” was in her thirties, tall and thin. “Esposo Mot” was being tended by “Bator”, who seemed to have helped the older man up the trail. The looked very much alike and Daniel suspected Bator was Mot’s son. “Esposo Tanor” said something when Carlina introduced him and she snapped back at him in reply.
*They sound like an old married couple* Daniel thought.
The last one in the group, a woman in her twenties, was introduced as Gwena and she smiled and blushed when Daniel caught her eye. She glanced quickly at Jack and Teal’c and turned even brighter.
Carlina gestured down the trail toward the village in what was obviously a gesture of invitation and they all began to move down the trail. Gwena gravitated to Teal’c side and smiled up at him. Carlina had positioned herself next to Carter and was chattering away at her. Daniel followed, hoping to get a handle on the language. He wasn’t really put out that Sam was the one doing the translating this time, but he felt a bit superfluous. As Daniel listened, he tried to sort out the language. While some of the words did indeed sound like Inuit, he felt that some of them did not. There were some that sounded Eastern European, some that he felt sure were Middle Eastern and one or two that he had no clue about.
“Daniel, she just asked me something and I’m afraid I can’t make it out.” Carter gestured him forward and he joined them.
“The woman spoke slowly and a little loudly, trying to make them understand.
“I think she is asking if we are “Esposos” but I don’t know what that means.” Carter explained.
"I don't think it's Inuit." Daniel answered her absently. "Esposos?" He asked the old woman.
Carlina nodded and pointed to herself, Mot, Maril and Tanor. “Esposos!” she said, as if that explained everything.
“Maybe it means elder or leader or something," he suggested. “They are all older and she is carrying that staff, which could be a symbol of office.
Jack joined the conversation. “She wants to know if we are leaders? Will she be willing to deal with us if we say we aren’t?”
“I don’t know, sir.” Carter said and Daniel shrugged to indicate his ignorance.
“We don’t want them to think we don’t have authority to trade or negotiate.” He looked at Carlina and smiled, “Yeah, sure. Esposos! Si!”
Carlina nodded and looked at Daniel, “Esposo?”
Carter nodded, following Jack’s lead and again when Carlina indicated Teal’c. Her eyes got a bit wide and she spoke sharply to Gwena, who pouted and moved over to walk next to Nynah. She called out to Maril and Daniel caught something that sounded like ‘twa esposos!’ at which Maril chuckled and whistled softly.
There was an air of amusement about the natives now as they walked and Daniel was so caught up in trying to catch the quick chattering that he didn’t see the tree root under his foot. He caught himself as he tripped but it was not enough to prevent the pain that took away his breath. He didn't *think* his ankle was broken, but it hurt enough to be.
Jack was by his side immediately, pulling one of Daniel’s arms over his shoulder and guiding him to a tree stump. As the colonel manipulated the painful ankle, Daniel caught the expressions Nynah and Gwena had on their faces as they watched. Some things were universal, and they were obviously thinking “Awww… how sweet!”
He wasn’t sure why watching someone give first aid to another would have that effect, but he was very aware that while one of Jack’s hands was supporting the heel of the injured foot, the other was resting on his thigh.
“Doesn’t look bad but I don’t want to take the boot off to look at it now to get a better look. We might not get it back on.” Jack said. He tightened the lace on the boot a bit. “The boot will actually work as a brace for now.”
Teal’c moved over to join them. “I will assist DanielJackson, O’Neill.”
“Right.” Jack nodded and took Daniel’s backpack. Teal’c moved to Daniel’s side and helped him to his feet.
They moved the rest of the way down the mountain, Daniel leaning on Teal’c and trying not to wince each time his foot touched the ground. To keep his mind off the pain, he kept fretting with the bits of the words he had heard. His mind kept returning to the word ‘esposos’, trying to figure out its etymological roots. His mind clicked over possibilities and suddenly he knew. No.
He looked ahead, to see Mot leaning on Bator, Maril fussing after him. Toward Carlina, winking at Tanor and laughing at something, upon which Tanor went forward to walk with Maril and Mot, the three of them chuckling together.
“Uh Jack.” He didn’t have to really raise his voice. Jack hadn’t gone more than a few feet away from him since he tripped.
“S’up Daniel?”
“I think I figured out what esposos means.”
Daniel didn’t have to look at Teal’c and Jack to know that both had raised their eyebrows. He sighed.
“It means spouses. Jack, I think you told them we are married.”
"Married. You and Carter?" Jack sounded amused.
"No, actually, I think they are polygamous. Carlina named three others as her esposos, not just one. She, *they* think that we are all married. All four of us."
Jack's only reaction at first was to raise his eyebrows and purse his lips. An odd look crossed his face as he glanced down at Daniel then up at Teal'c. "Hunh. I don't suppose we ought to straighten them out? Let them know we made a mistake?"
"I don't know, Jack. They obviously assumed that we were since we were traveling together. Maybe their culture has problems with men and women who are unmarried traveling together."
"They may try to separate us from Major Carter if we correct them, O'Neill." Teal'c said quietly. "I would not desire to separate the team."
"You remember what happened the last time a culture separated us because Sam was female? I really don't want to go through that again." Daniel added.
Jack winced and agreed. She had been in a bad mood for days, blaming them for not insisting she stay with them. He had to agree. She wouldn't have been stolen as a slave for the Mongol chieftain if they had stayed together..
"Okay, I'll go get her and make nice with the old lady while you fill her in."
"Me?" Daniel voice cracked. "Why do *I* have to tell her?"
"It's your theory, Daniel." Jack smirked and trotted up to Carter. He put a hand on her shoulder as he whispered in her ear. Carter nodded and slowed her pace until she was back beside her other teammates.
"Problem, guys? Colonel O'Neill said you needed me." She frowned at them curiously.
Daniel noticed curious looks being leveled at them and sighed. The people were going to suspect something was up unless they acted their parts. He gave Sam a smile that he hoped looked warm and inviting. She looked a bit puzzled.
"Yeah, uh, remember how we didn't know what esposa meant?" At her nod, he continued. "I think I figured out what it means. Jack basically told them we are married."
Carter got a wicked grin on her face. "So, they think you and I are a couple huh?" She winked at him.
"Uh, actually…" He hesitated, not sure what to make of her amusement. "I think they think we are *all* married." Her face went blank for a moment as she took in the information. "All four of us." He looked at her closely, then started to frown as she began to chuckle.
"Oh my God…" She started to laugh, looked ahead to the group walking in front of them. Jack had looked over his shoulder when he heard her and she started to laugh harder.
Teal'c and Daniel stopped, worried, when she started to giggle helplessly. She was holding her sides and tears began to leak down her face. The entire group stopped to watch, curiously, as she struggled to regain control.
Teal'c placed a hand on her shoulder in concern. "Are you well, Major Carter?" She looked at his hand and up at his face and began a fresh roll of laughter.
"Carter!" Jack's voice rang out and Daniel could see the effort she made to get herself back under control.
Her voice barely wobbled as she called back, "Yes, dear?"
Jack looked a bit surprised and then smirked, looking down and to the side before calling back, "Y'all right? Sweetheart?"
The endearment caught her by surprise and silenced her for a moment. She just waved a hand at him and started walking, chuckling to herself. The rest of the group began walking again when she did, the villagers giving her sidelong glances from time to time.
"Sam? Wanna share the joke?" Daniel was panting a bit with the effort of hobbling next to Teal'c. Stretching his arm over the Jaffa was a bit difficult and made it hard to walk and breathe at the same time. Sam gestured and Teal'c surrendered his place to her, pulling her pack from her at the same time. The change in places caught the interest of the villagers and brought a fresh round of chatter.
"Well, I thought they were looking at me funny…" she sounded like she was about to start giggling again.
"Saaaam…" Daniel warned her.
"Sorry, I can't but wonder how they think I keep up with three husbands!" she dissolved into another fit of giggles and Daniel couldn't help laughing himself. He looked up and saw a look of amusement on Teal'c's face as well.
"You know," Daniel commented when they stopped laughing, "we are going to have to make sure they believe this. I think they may separate us if they don't."
"Oh, no! We are not doing *that* again!" Her voice was ominous. "If we have to make them believe it to stay together then, by God, that is what we'll do." There was no arguing with her when she got that tone in her voice.
Daniel tightened his arm around her shoulder in a half-hug to show his agreement and was more than a little surprised when the hand that was wrapped around his hip slid lower and grabbed his backside. He looked up at her in astonishment just in time to get a quick kiss on the lips.
"Gotta make it look good don't we?"
Part Two Oh, this is much better, cut like this!
