We've got a new forest monitoring plot about half way up that slope... It's a bitch to get up to and down from. I can't wait to climb up there repeatedly next fall for salamander monitoring.

The Clyburn Valley is full of beech trees. Bears like to fatten up on beech nuts in the fall... this means that to get to certain monitoring sites, we have to walk through bear habitat. Until this day, I'd only ever seen one bear at about 1km... now I've seen 3 at less than 100m :P
