Crab spider (Thomisidae) on sheep-laurel (Kalmia angustifolia). Sheep-laurel is a common woodland plant belonging to the heather family (Ericaceae), one of my favorite plant families, along with blueberries, wintergreen, various heath pleants and the like. As some of its other common names imply, the leaves of sheep-laurel are somewhat toxic, and the plant actually inhibits the growth of other plants near it, similar to bracken fern.
