Engagement FAQ

Okay, lots of people have been asking us lots of questions, so we thought we would try to answer some of them in 1 location.

The two most common questions:

1.  When's the wedding/ceremony?
A:  Not till after I graduate so that we're living in the same zip code.  (Think 2010.)

2.  What kind of celebration are you going to have?
A:  We haven't figured that out yet.  It seems far away, and we're hoping that some laws will have changed by then.  But we have thought about food options for the dress rehearsal and reception and whatnot.

And the other random questions:

3. Why did Juka propose instead of Jenn?
A:  Because I'm not the kind of person to sit around patiently and wait.... for anything.

4. What kind of ring is Juka is getting?
A:  I don't know yet.  Theoretically, the ring was designed for both of us to like.  But then Jenn asked what design I wanted.  And that confused my poor little brain.  It will still have an alexandrite stone (which worries the jeweler since I am hard on rings) and have a similar celtic knot theme.

5. How did the parents take it?
A:  Well, I told my mom ahead of time, and she said "How much did the ring cost?  Why are you proposing?  Why are you going to a B&B."  When I called the Sunday as I was driving back, she asked "Did Jenn like the ring?"  And that was it.
For Jenn, it was slightly different.  Her dad was silent.  And then he had go do church stuff.  Her mom was as supportive as she could be, and asked many of the same questions that you all are.

6.  What's the stone and is there a significance?
A:  It's called an alexandrite.  I happened to buy 2 while I was in Russia.  And they're wicked cool.  They're also kinda rainbowy in that they change color depending on the light.  In photographs, they are either purple or fuschia.  But they can look dark red, blue, or green.   As I said, they're wicked cool.  They also have a hardness of 8.5, so they're between an emerald and a ruby.  Not as hard as the jeweler would like, but decently hard.

6.  What's the inscription?
A:  Caritas ex Deo est.  It means "Love is of God," and it's a quote from 1 John 4:7.  I put it in there as a reminder that no love can exist without God, and that our relationship has to be built on our faith. And that our relationship is a gift from God.

7.  How long have you been together?
A: You skipped that part of the story of the story to go directly to the proposal, didn't you?  Our first pseudo-maybe date was on Dec 2, 2006.  We went to go see Happy Feet, eat at Champs, then stand on the corner talking for an hour before getting ice cream.  So our date lasted 5 hours.  Our second date lasted 8 and involved 2 meals and a museum.

8.  So why propose on Nov 14th?
A:  Cuz that's when we could get the B&B.  I originally thought it was going to be Oct 17th.  There's no other special reason.  I just felt like it was time.

I think that pretty much covers it.  If we missed something, just ask below and one of us will answer.
