[happy new year!]

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!!

2007 was kind of a huge year for me - aside from graduating uni with my second masters' degree, I had a complete rediscovery of self, changed my LJ name, discovered a new fandom, started really writing again, met a tonne of new and amazing friends, found my calling, and got to the point where I am actually happy with who I am, and secure in the knowledge that I kick ass. It's such an enormous leap from 2006, though that was also a big year in its own way, but despite the fact that 2007 was hard, I'll definitely remember it with great fondness.

For 2008, I expect big changes - now that I've graduated, I have to find some form of real job, though it remains yet to be seen what that will be (or where, as the bigger question). I also have some big New Years' resolutions, namely:
1. Read at least 100 books (this was a resolution from last year as well, and I did it, so I'm sure I can again)
2. Learn at least 500 kanji - I would prefer this be 800, but I'm trying to be realistic
3. Actually learn to speak Japanese
4. Start playing instruments again on a regular basis, and seriously
5. Take up some regular physical activity, possibly tae kwon do or something else readily available in SF
6. Go skiing while I still can

and fannishly:

7. Write on a regular basis - no more of this weeks without a single word written (now I have no excuse!) - goal for this year is 350,000 words.
8. Complete the big projects I've been plotting (this includes Tezuka/Atobe, Atobe/Oshitari, Shishido/Ootori, Sanada/Yanagi, a couple Big AUs, and other things I shall defer mentioning)
9. Write outside my comfort zone - I did quite a bit of that toward the end of this year, though I say that all of PoT has been something outside my comfort zone since I've been in the fandom for such a short length of time that it's all new and equally terrifying - and quit second guessing myself
10. Give new fandoms/characterisations/perspectives a chance

As far as my fandom year in review...

Total Word Count: 200,739 posted (!!!)
Fandoms Written In: Prince of Tennis, Harry Potter, Doctor Who/Torchwood, The West Wing, TxN (rps), Disney, Drive
This doesn't count WIPs, collabs that haven't been cleaned up and posted yet *coughs*, RP stuff, etc, but does include fic exchanges whose reveals haven't gone up yet.

Favourite Fic: Sasuga Tezuka (Tezuka/Fuji, NC-17)
This fic ate my brain for about six months, and when it finally made its way out, it was in quite a different form than I had expected, much more psychological and such than just the quasi-PWP that I'd had in mind. I really love Atobe and Oshitari in this especially, and it has an ensemble scene that I adore, and the dynamic between Tezuka and Fuji has stuck as well, since it's spawned two spinoffs, with at least one other on the way.
Fuji had always been able to affect him in ways other people couldn't. Tezuka had considered Fuji his greatest rival when facing him on the courts, but off them, Fuji was his foil, someone who wasn't in direct contrast to him by any means, but who...balanced him, somehow, and drew out his shadow until it found a foothold of expression. Fuji had never been comforting to him; quite the opposite, in fact, in that he'd taken pleasure in making things uncomfortable for Tezuka. As much as he'd helped Tezuka grow, he'd torn him apart to do it, every single time.

Best Fic: Mirror Mirror (Neville/Harry, NC-17)
This one's kind of a toss-up, because I think Sasuga Tezuka may have been my best as well, but I was surprised by how Mirror Mirror turned out - it's a very different pairing dynamic than I'm used to writing, and I think it worked really well, and also helped me prove to myself that I can still write darker, psychologically fucked up fics that are less than pretty while still having a sense of cathartic enjoyability.
'You understand,' Harry says, and it's not a question. His gaze pierces Neville through the heart, vivisecting him like the most brutal Avada Kedavra imaginable. 'You feel it too. You're angry that you couldn't do enough, but you keep it all inside. You need to let it out, Neville,' he says, and his words are pointed like the shards of mirror Neville can still feel stabbing into his feet. 'You'll poison yourself if you don't.'

Most Underappreciated Fic: Selfish (Neville/Harry, hints of Snape/Harry and Snape/Neville, PG)
The one I really want for this category is an exchange fic, so I can't include it, but this one I thought turned out really very well, and it didn't get very much love. I wrote it right after DH though, when there was such a huge deluge of fic, plus which it's rather gen-ish, so I imagine it got passed over, but...hey, here it is again!
But Neville...somehow, there's something different about Neville. He saw it before, on Neville's face, when he thought he was going to his death and he wanted Neville to tie up the loose ends for him - it feels more like looking into a mirror these days, and Harry is hard-pressed to remember the clumsy, shy boy that Hermione Petrified on their way to meet a three-headed dog, all those years ago. There's quiet strength behind those still-boyish features, and just his gaze says more than anyone else is willing to.

Most Fun Fic: fuck, will fuck, are fucking, have fucked (Yagyuu/Niou, NC-17)
I was terrified of writing D1, and I'm still not happy with the way they're characterised, but any fic where Niou gets turned on by Yagyuu giving him English tutoring is enough to make me glee despite all that. It's not crack-fic, not in the way that some of the real crack I've written this year is, but it's fun anyway and I still enjoy reading it. Besides. NERDPORN!!
A very small part of his mind recognised that he was supposed to translate what Yagyuu had just said, and knew that he had no fucking clue whatsoever, but the rest of his thoughts were consumed by the fact that Yagyuu sounded filthy. Niou didn't think much of English at all, and had never bothered with it much except doing what he had to to keep a passing grade in the class, but this.... The cultured, smooth lilt and crisp consonants of Yagyuu's usual speech were gone. Instead, the words that fell from his lips were rough, guttural, vowels elided and consonants bitten off; it was positively vulgar, and Niou hadn't known that he could get so hard so fast.

Sexiest Fic: Eyes Wide Open, Tezuka/Fuji, R
This I suppose depends on what you consider sexy. I like this one because it's all intense, unrestrained passion and the culmination of however many months and years of UST all coalescing into a single moment, and I find that watching Tezuka and Fuji's match in that last ranking tournament in the anime before reading this makes the point of climax that much more powerful
Adrenaline roars through his veins, making his eyes burn behind the comforting protection of his eyelids, and his hand shakes where it clutches the handle of his racket, arm muscles twitching with remembered shock of strike against strike, chipping away at the stony armour he's worn for as long as he can remember. He still doesn't know where it came from, what it was for - keeping everything else out, or keeping himself in - but it's cracked now, irrevocably, and he knows that with every step he takes on that court now, with every serve and smash and volley, the pieces will fall away and scatter like dust.

Holy crap, that's wrong even for you! Fic: The Perils of Foreign Cuisine, Tezuka/Atobe, PG-13
It has Tezuka and Atobe. In Canada. Eating poutine.

Enough said.
'This,' Atobe said, leaning forward to sniff it like it was the greatest delicacy on the planet, 'is poutine.'

'What in blazes is that?' It even sounded unappetising, which was disturbing because usually Atobe speaking in French made Tezuka want to jump him before he'd finished growling his last R.

Fic that shifted my own perception of the characters: A Different Approach, Minami/Higashikata, G
Mostly I hadn't ever really thought too much about Yamabuki before, and yet somehow in the course of writing this fic, they suddenly made perfect sense to me, simply via exploring Minami's own state of mind. It tied up its ends on its own, and when that happens, things just sort of fall into place in my head, so I'm really very pleased with it.
It's true that everyone on Yamabuki is driven individually - aside from Akutsu, who is an anomaly anyway, everyone wants to go to Nationals because they want to win. They may not feel any special loyalty to him, but they have their own goals, and the reason they work so well together is because their goals match.

Fic I'm Most Proud Of: I'll tell you after fic exchange reveals go up. *g* Meanwhile... *nudges in direction of Sasuga Tezuka*

Biggest Disappointment: Paradoxical, Doctor Who/West Wing crossover, PG
It was such a good idea, but I don't feel like it was executed well at all. Of course, that could just be me being hard on myself, but you know.
Guess he decided this outing was a success then, Martha thought, trying not to imagine the gleeful look on the Doctor's face as he flailed at the new President. She and Jack had already decided there must have been something good that came out of the Master's visit, and it seemed this was it - America was no longer being run by a complete idiot, if his staff was any indication.

Biggest Surprise: Binary Code, Fuji/Inui, R
This was my first foray into PoT, and it surprised me for three reasons - I'd written in a fandom I'd never expected to write in, I'd enjoyed the characters so much, and it was well received. And...I haven't looked back since then. XD
Inui had studied Fuji for almost three years now, and had documented exactly one thousand nine hundred forty three different variations of Fuji's signature smile. He couldn't begin to say what they all meant, and any time he thought he had one down, Fuji would just Look at him and he'd have to throw away his data again. He was the most frustrating enigma Inui had ever met.

It turned him on something fierce.

Hardest Fic to Write: fuck, will fuck, are fucking, have fucked
This was really difficult because it was my first time writing Rikkai, and it was D1, and I wibbled at giving_ground kind of a lot while writing it, and yeah. I'll spare you. But yes, it was very difficult to do, but I'm very glad I did it. This is why I do fic exchanges.

A Fic I Want Remembered: definitely Sasuga Tezuka. No two ways about it.

Goals for Next Year: As I said above. Finish the novel-length fics I have in my head - Atobe/Oshitari, Tezuka/Atobe, Shishido/Ootori, etc. Write the SanaYana and YukiYana fics that have been chewing on me. Get the RPS out of my system. And I really want to try writing outside my comfort zone more, especially in minor schools and pairings, because there are too many characters I love who don't get nearly enough attention. Also, there's just a general sense of write more - not necessarily quantity-wise, but make sure to write regularly. That sort of thing.

PLUS four exchange fics for santa_smex, christmas_cacti, amd merry_smutmas, totaling 69,260 words.

In summary, I have written:
* 6 HP fics - 2 Harry/Neville, 1 Harry/Draco, 1 Seamus/Dean, 1 Ginny/Tonks - plus one fic for merry_smutmas and a handful (about ten) of HP drabbles
* 18 (!!!) PoT fics - 8 Tezuka/Fuji (incl. 2 for christmas_cacti, 3 Shishido/Ootori (incl. Spandex), 1 Tezuka/Fuji/Atobe/Oshitari, 1 Tezuka/Atobe, 1 Fuji/Inui, 1 Inui/Kaidoh, 1 Eiji/Oishi, 1 D1, 1 Saeki/Fuji, 1 Kite/Tezuka, 1 Minami/Higashikata - plus one fic for santa_smex and a couple more drabbles
* 1 RPS fic (TxN)
* 1 West Wing fic
* 1 West Wing/Doctor Who crossover fic
* 1 Drive fic
* 1 Disney fic
* 1 QaF drabble

Not a terrible turnout, especially considering how busy (and braindead) school and work have been keeping me, but I know I can do better. A good 60% of that is from the last third of the year.

Other big things for 2008: MIRANDISED!!! This is the Seekrit Project I've been so excited about - it's a Prince of Tennis/Firefly crossover RP, and we have an amazing cast, and some preliminary logging going on already, but as of today the game is officially open, so hopefully once we've gotten going and are in the swing of things, I'll be able to point you all that direction so you can enjoy as much as I've been.

Also, longleggedgit and I have some collabs planned/in the works, which is always exciting, and I have another thing or two planned that I'll be telling everyone about before too long. >.>

Anyway. Everyone's flist I'm sure is ridiculously long and active, so I'll leave off there for now. After fest reveals, I'll be posting those fics here, so keep an eye out for those. Also, I've written a lot of fic/lets over the past few days that have probably gotten lost amidst the holiday rush, so I'll be pointing at those later in the week once things calm down. Meanwhile, WELCOME TO 2008!!!
