Why Do People Learning a Language OFTEN QUIT ?

"Yes, you CAN"
(Anna Barskaya :)

For one of those reasons:

1) "Bad" learning program
They feel that they don't need "this vocabulary". A personal Qualified (!) teacher or a Language Consultant could help them make such a program more individual, corresponding to their needs, - but... they don't realize it.

2) "Bad" explanation
A qualified teacher is not always a good "explainer", and sometimes it takes more time and effort to find one.

3) The number of excercises is not sufficient
Very often learning programs follow the scheme: a) give new info, b) give 1-2 exercises JUST to make sure that "it's clear".
NB "Sufficient" means enough to make new info your OWN knowledge and skills, when you use something without too much thinking on "how".

4) Exercises make no SYSTEM :
a) they should correspond to the STAGES of how we perceive new info (see here),
b) practice should be diversified in 4 types of activities: 2 passive ones (reading, listening) and 2 active ones (writing, speaking).

5) Psychological particularities are not considered:
As for learning a foreign language, there are emotional learners-actors and more logical learners. They requires 2 different approaches.
a) The first ones will not quit if they find in their language course new emotions, ways to "travel without travelling" or to "play on a stage", to let their emotions free, especially after hard work in the office. Without too much formalities like tests, notes, etc. When they find no area to express their emotions and imagination, no way to "play", they quit.
b) The second ones will appreciate a personalized approach as for their career and schedule needs, without spending time on what they dont' need. They like "real things" and real situations, without inventing anything. That's why they don't like exercises like "Imagine that you are...." or "Describe..." That's not for them.
If they are pushed to do it by their teacher, they will soon quit.
