I like how the first weekend I decide to use the Italian trains, they go on strike. So cheers for being semi-stranded in Pisa, and then having my family drive me all the way to Lucca. Thanks, Italy.

Anyway, my weekend in a nutshell. Friday I chilled out with Botticelli and the rest of the gang at the Uffizi. You know how I do. Then spent the weekend with my cousins. Passed through 2359298709 small Tuscan towns, had an enormous family dinner, went to Pisa to get my Tower on, tried using a dial-up modem to no avail, and eventually hung out with Saint Michael and Saint Martin in Lucca. (Aunt Debbie would be happy to know I lit a candle for her in San Martino.)

The Italian countryside, where my family lives, is just incredible. The most relaxing place, with awe-inspiring views of Pisa and miles and miles of rolling hills. And Lucca was really quite lovely, with its 900 churches in my favorite architectural style by far- Romanesque. Hopefully I'll go back there, and next time it won't be a school-planned trip.

and can I just say there is something absolutely irresistible about non-American children? Even when they should be annoying, they're still super cute. Like my five year old cousin, who rocks out on the air guitar with a faux-hawk and shouts things like "Vittoria! Vendetta!" for no apparent reason.

Dinner Friday night was at my cousin Olivia's house, and I think I'm in love with her parents and her grandmother. Your typical ridiculous family dinner at the home of typical hospitable, super-nice Italians. Also had some awesome non-Italian food, because it doesn't hurt to have Thai relatives. Leno's wife Suree made some dish that I can't pronounce and surely can't spell, but I can say it was good.

I've been eating an inhumane amount of Nutella also. Between that and coffee and tea, the only real food I've eaten is what I had this weekend.

I feel like I had a lot more to say about this weekend. I'll post pictures from the weekend one of these days, and maybe continue this later. Photos will be here, someday: http://martinadamato.blogspot.com/
