Yuletide: it's HAPPENING! :D The assignments went out yesterday, then it turned out they were messed up, and I just got my REAL assignment, which, though not as great as the original "messed up" one, is still quite all right. YAY, etc. I'm off to muse and muse on my favourite TV show of all time. (Won't say any more, there's the secrecy thing to Yuletide...)
In the meantime, my beautiful, bountiful Yuletide writer may be looking this journal up, trying to divine my secret desires.
No big fat secrets here, dear B.B.Y. Writer.
Caveat before I begin: my only real preference in any story you choose to write is that it be genfic. Other than that, please write anything you like - if you have a story in your head waiting to get out, tell it. Whatever makes you happy. The following are just vague guidelines should you feel you need them. Even in places that my guidelines are not so vague, you are welcome to ignore me and go your own merry way.
In the Mahabharata, what fascinates me the most is that incredible literary device used to communicate core philosophy: hey, let's plonk down in the middle of this ginormous battle scene, stop time for a bit, and discuss the meaning of life. Genius. Could it possibly be any more dramatic or suspenseful? *sigh* Would that I could write that way. The second most fascinating thing to me is Karna and Duryodhana: to me, they're the most admirable people in the whole saga. Karna is admirable in the incorruptible, shining hero sort of way, and Duryodhana is just so realistically human while clearly being a truly noble creature at heart. It takes some out of the box thinking, after all, to go against ingrained tradition to embrace a "suta putra" and declare that one's station of birth is of no consequence.
If you're writing an Asterix story, feel free to move outside the bounds of "Asterix the Gaul" and write anything at all you please (as long as it's genfic, thx). My love for this series is boundless, my admiration for both the writers and the British translators is immense... I know it's a lot of pressure to think you have to live up to them, but I'm just looking to spend a bit more time with my favourite characters, that's all. What I like best are stories in which the magic potion (and/or Obelix's strength) don't feature - that's when Asterix's cunning shines forth in all its glory, that's when the characters all make their best jokes.
Pulp Fiction is my favourite movie of all time, and "The Bonnie Situation" is my absolute favourite segment of it. Just... the way it brings every strand of the plot together... that's genius. Plus the dialogue, obviously. And Jules. :) I'm reduced to a gibbering fangirl just thinking about it. I'll shut up now, because I have nothing to add to what I already said in the request.
This is Spinal Tap - I think that's the most difficult request to do, and if you picked it, you have all my admiration for pure balls. I give you free rein over this story, as long as it's mostly gen, because I think putting any more restrictions on you in writing this already difficult piece would be asking too much. All I ask is that you stick to the spirit of the movie, because I worship it in it's shining glorious perfection.
Last but not least: I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to you, my dear B.B.Y. Writer. Good luck, and happy Yuletide writing!
