Year in review

Dec 26, 2013 08:52

It's been almost half a year since I posted anything. So, here is 2013, a review.

1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?

Rode in an elevator to my apartment, since our house never had it before. It was a bloody glorious feeling not having to carry all the bags up on foot.

I started hanging on tumblr.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Cannot find the list to check it out. But I believe I failed to hike on five new peaks.
Yeah, I will make them.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Cannot think of anyone.

5. What countries did you visit?

Let's put it this way, I didn't visit any countries I haven't visited before.

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?

Confidence that it will be good, as long as I finish it. Just bloody finish the idea I have/had.

7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

The day I presented one of my papers as an achievement of the (previous) year.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Getting one of my lectures taped and put on official video lectures list.

Improving the state of my lower back by working out.
(Also, making this post after almost six months of silence will feel as an achievement as well.)

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not hiking as much as I thought I would.
Not publishing as much as I could or should.
Losing touch with my LJ and DW friends.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I suffered from back pain, but managed to improve that with the help of a physiotherapist and by doing focused exercises she prescribed me.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Black pullover I bought sometime in February. I sleep in it every night. My bag I got myself on my birthday.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

One of my co-workers, she really came through for me.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

Most of my other co-workers, and if I'm honest, I recognised myself a lot in them. That realisation made me appalled.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Nothing in particular. We got an elevator in our house, that's costly. Just life in general.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Seeing Eddie Izzard perform live at my hometown.

16. What song will always remind you of 2013?

One national song I heard at a concert and I realised that I should learn lyrics to it.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? Happier. Sadder. Both really. Definitely more cynical.
ii. thinner or fatter? About the same, maybe couple of pounds heavier due to all the eating in December? I don't know, I still don't have a scale since it broke down over a year ago. My clothes still fit, but then again, I haven't washed my jeans this month.
iii. richer or poorer? A bit poorer thanks to our bloody politicians who are doing their best to ruin this country.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Hiked, asked friends to join me on my hikes.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Procrastinate. Complain.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

Ate with my mom on Christmas Eve. Slept and rested on Christmas day, since I developed a cold at the beginning of the week and worked through the first days when I should be actively resting instead.

21. Did you fall in love in 2013?

Not really. I remained being in love with Mr.c588.
Though in all fairness, I should confess that my interest in Dylan O'Brien reached impressive proportions.

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

On that note - I realised I am officially old. Probably I'll shake my head at myself in ten years time, but really. It hit me that I am off the market. I mean, I am off the market, since I'm with Mr.c588, but you know what I mean - the potential for a hook up - it's like - vanished.

24. What was your favourite TV program?

Elementary, The Good Wife, Hart of Dixie.
Almost Human - but that's because it's a new show and we're in a honeymoon phase.
(yeah, Teen Wolf didn't make it on the list, because it sucked. Seriously, Jeff Davis, killing off Erica AND Boyd? What were you thinking? Asshole.)

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No. Hate is a very strong and powerful emotion. Though I am more and more selective of whom I actively interact with.

26. What was the best book you read?

Um. This is really embarrassing, but I didn't actually read any book that would stand out. Should make it a goal for 2014.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Can't say that it was a great discovery, but I took my mom to a concert of one female performer and was surprised at the positivity of her show and lyrics. It was a good occasion.

28. What did you want and get?

A new bag, an elevator in my house.

29. What did you want and not get?

Cannot think of anything.

I did lose something very valuable to me though, my workout studio closed its location, which was outstanding, the best and beautiful not just in town, but I dare say among the studios in Europe. The new place sucks, it's small, uncomfortable, and so bloody average it makes me wanna spit at the owner who made this stupid ass decision. It sucks so much, I stopped going and now I have to find a new staple place, or better, develop a new routine for working out at different places. I hope I don't fall off my 3 - 4 times a week schedule.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?

Don't have one.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Spent half a day at work, left early and went for a good lunch with mom and bought myself a new bag. I turned 40. Yeah.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably satisfying?

If my workout studio hadn't changed the location. Gosh, sounds superficial, but losing that place felt like the worse break up ever and it really impacted my well being in the last quarter of the year.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?

Simple and comfortable. I'm getting lazy, dammit. I keep reminding myself that my younger self would give my current self a very stern talking to regarding appearances.

34. What kept you sane?

Working out. Seriously, developing a routine for working out 3 to 4 times a week was the best achievement. I hope I can keep it up.
The little interaction I still manage to have with on line friends. Mr.c588. ♥

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Dylan O'Brien. I wish he'd sleep more. Demi Lovato was a nice discovery. I don't know her music at all, but I've googled bits and pieces after Dylan's tweet, and I liked what I read or saw.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Which one doesn't. I stopped reading the newspapers and listening/watching to the news because I just cannot take the level of stupidity, obnoxiousness and ignorance anymore.

37. Who did you miss?

I believe the most people are the people I interacted with previously on line? I miss LJ and DW, not that I am actively doing anything about it. I miss exchanging comments with people. I just miss reading posts, for example
scribblinlenore,
pun,
oxoniensis and
svmadelyn. I'm glad
no_detective has a twitter and couple of other friends I have on FB.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I didn't meet anyone that would stand out...

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:

It was when I had to organise something work related. No matter what, where or how you do it, somebody is going to be find something negative about it. Everybody is so bloody judgemental, having enormous sense of entitlement and bitchy. (I include myself in this.)
My lesson was - just shut up, suck it up and don't take it personally.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

Song lyrics are not my area, but I believe this sums it up well: Dress up. Show up.
Just do it.
