4. The Good Guy, by Dean Koontz
In my personal opinion, not his best effort. Koontz is generally very good and suspenseful, and I've read a book of his that I wouldn't reread. However, this isn't in my top ten or top fifteen of his novels. It's nothing glaringly obvious, just a lack of excellence. The characterization is sketchy, though the plot is well-constructed and Koontz keeps the twists and turns coming, always another surprise. I love rich characters more than spiffy plots, though, so that might be my issue. And I sort of disliked the ending; it felt a little flat. It's not a bad book, it's just not one I'd take to a deserted island.
