the war on bugs, part deux

Mar 02, 2006 12:50

This time, instead of literally fighting bugs, I am dealing w/the figurative ones: an AIM virus! God...how do people get enjoyment out of creating programs that cause so much trouble? My cousin "sent" me an IM that read:

Where should I post the pictures of us? On facebook or myspace?

Included was a link. Under normal circumstances, I'd like to believe that my common sense would have intervened and stopped me from clicking it. But because it was my cousin, I thought he was talking about childhood pictures that included Victor, so I clicked without hesitation. The virus proceeded to instant message my buddy list with the same message. By the time I was finally able to exit the AIM, it was too late. Some of my them had fallen victim as well. I ran Norton Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware, & AimFix, as well as manually deleting the file I downloaded. I hope this was enough. I don't want someone to steal my identity!

For Lent, I am giving up AIM. You can still find me on MSN Messenger (derekobecniv@hotmail.com), GoogleTalk/Gmail, MySpace, & Facebook. I've always liked the interface of MSN Messenger better anyway.
