Over 5 years since I actively used this site... It was meant to be more of an outlet for me, a place to come on and vent and what not. But going back and reading through my posts it didn't end up being that.
Life's been interesting... been working at the same company I have been for awhile and got a few promotions. But lately I feel like the road is ending for me there. I had my opportunities and most worked out and some didn't. I tried something new and even though it seems I failed at it, I have to say it was not 100% on me. It's tough to try and change the world when you have no support to do it. I worked my way up to a Supervisor, we tried to take an existing team/dept we had and completely change it. But at the end of the day upper management wanted to keep the old model... I tried my best to change the way things were being ran. They blended 3 departments into one, this required the team to not only answer phones but getting rates, coordinating services then get everything setup for future requests. This usually requires 3-4 departments depending on the request. We wanted to streamline that... a one stop shop per say for the clients (make their lives easier they said). But it was doomed to fail from the start, why? Nothing that was supposed to happen... happened. Our 2 month hiring lead time got cut to 2 weeks all while the job was posted right before Christmas with the start taking place second week of January. The training from the other teams we were supposed to get never happened. We were given more clients than the 4 people we had at the time could manage. It got to the point that we were always behind... trainings had to be done 1-2 at a time, while having a team of about 18 people. I ended up hiring the first group of people, we had great talent (alot of which had promotions from this role), until management felt like they needed to speed up the hiring process, they ended up hiring anyone off the street. We're talking about people who would fall asleep on the job, to baby daddy issues, people who would take 2 hour breaks and all while HR was telling me "nope, we can't do anything about these things". Funny... how you will write someone for getting a 91% out of 94% quality but refuse to write up the person who comes in late every day for a month and then once she clocks in vanishes for 20 more minutes.
There are alot of politics the higher you go, some good...some bad. But to me it was not worth dealing with the clueless nonsense of people who get paid alot more than I do but have no idea how anything works. If you're thinking about ever taking that promotion because you could use the money, just think about the BS, the long hours, the 6-11 hour days, other choices being made for you but you having to deliver on them. Just think about all those things... they can and will change you at the end of the day. Trust me when I tell you that.
