I think this book had the most epic scene: where Jake morphs to falcon in front of his parents so that he could give them a sliver of hope that he was still free. I dunno - that was really powerful even though it was put across in a few lines.

Actually I don't think however heartbroken Tobias was, that he never sneaked a peek at Loren or was unconcerned with her life. He might have found her difficult to relate to or whatsoever, but the moment she saved him from the Dracon beam and the little moment they had before they procured the dynamites (holding hands, was it?) - I thought that was more than enough to show that he did accept her in a small way.

Post-war Tobias-spying-on-Loren plot bunny ftw. Anyone? ;)

I loved that part too, where Jake morphs for his parents. And like, how touching and poignant that he's morphing to a bird of prey as a symbol of his freedom, when Tobias is trapped in hawk morph forever (even though the hawk ultimately came to mean salvation from his crappy life, you know?). There's so many amazing layers in that scene... ooh, goosebumps. :)

I never understood how Jake managed to go the 1.5-2 minutes it took to morph. A moment before, his parents were firing Dracon beams at him.

Desperation, rage and horror does wonders to your morphing abilities, apparently. Although those emotions are usually a hindrance lol.

That's my favorite scene too from this book. I also love the part when they're going to go save his parents and Tom and Jake is all determined and Tobias does a little analysis of him and compares him to Rachel.
