More Books: Reflecting (a little) on fantasy and the modern

Jul 11, 2010 09:38

I intended to buy some boots yesterday but some how walked out of the store with five books...The sale ends today and I'm currently fidgeting at home with a calculator.

Anyway, I finally bought and read Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, ignoring my wariness of pretty covers since Twilight. I also quite enjoyed reading it :) though I wanted Beira to be ( Read more... )

fantasy, the usual: books

OMG I love Patricia A. McKillip. Have you read The Changeling Sea or The Forgotten Beasts of Eld? I've read almost everything I could get my hands on by her but those two are the best, in my opinion.

Also, I totally get what you mean about the fantasy language vs. modern language in Wicked Lovely. It's even more prevalent in the sequels, but I really loved Ink Exchange (which is the companion novel to WL and the next one in the series) so I wonder if you like it more. Happy reading!

Sadly not yet, someone has borrowed them from the library but they're at the top of my reserve list :)

I'm currently reading Ink Exchange, lol I decided to buy the rest of the series so I might post up my thoughts in a few days time :)

I quite like the Wicked Lovely series, although, the random WTF's and OMG's put me off. Great books, though. But it just feels like Marr is trying too hard to appeal to this new generation of moderately stupid teenagers. Which is quite sad.

And I know how you feel about having to order books. I hate that they're not all sold here in Australia. It's so depressing. And now I'm going to have to order some Patricia A. McKillip books thanks to you (suuuuuuch pretty covers!!). Damn you. :P

I can see what you mean, the books would still be good without that stuff. lol at 'moderately stupid.'

Don't worry, my order list will be just as long :P but it is frustrating when you really want to read a book and can't find it.

That cover is pretty @_@

I tried reading Wicked Lovely a few months ago online. I couldn`t get into it. I decided to give it another chance and bought it a few weeks ago. I haven`t read it yet though.

The same thing happens to me sometimes too.

I made the mistake of looking up the cover artist's other work, so beautiful, I shall run out of coin soon: http://www.kycraft.com/art_gallery0.html
