Um... I don't understand how to trade votes and I don't want to screw up before hand... do I vote first and then trade the leftover votes or do I trade first...? Do I click anything on the polls where I want to trade votes?

You can do either. At any point during the competition you can go here and here and add to your votes or change them. Just vote in the categories you wish to, and then let people know in reply what you have open and what you want trades for.
