Chapter 1

The world was spinning in black and grey tones as he struggled to open his eyes.  The first thing he saw was a bright ceiling light.  He groaned in pain and automatically shut his eyes.  The darkness slowly soothed his eyes before a voice registered in his brain.

“Nino?”

Ninomiya Kazunari slowly turned his face in the direction of the voice and cracked his eyes open.  Sitting on a small stool was a man with black hair, a suit on, and a relieved expression on his face.

“Sa….Sakurai-kun?”

Sakurai Sho slowly smiled as he scooted his seat closer to Nino’s reaching hand.

“It’s ok, Nino.  Get some rest now.”

With that, Nino drifted off into the darkness once again.

There are white flashes of a tall, good-looking police officer holding up a gun to a masked man with someone in his arms as hostage.  The masked man shouted at the police officer as the he shouted back to the enemy.

Nino abruptly woke up and sat up too quickly for his good.  An awful pain triggered in his chest as Nino reached up to massage it, only to discover a huge bandage around the area of his heart.  Nino’s quick breathes and sweat was evident that he just experienced a nightmare.  He tried to calm down but Sho walked into the room with a cup of water.  Sho saw the awakened Nino and rushed to the bedside.

“Nino!  Are you okay?”

Someone else yelped as he ran into the room and kneeled next to Sho.  His tired look at his face and bandana over his normally faded brown hair shone his wariness.

“Kazu-kun, you’re awake…”

Nino allowed Sho to help him lay back down on his pillows before gazing at the new visitor.

“Masaki-kun…”

“Shh, you don’t have to talk”, Aiba immediately said as he pulled up a stool for himself and sat down next to Sho.

Nino nodded as his hand slowly touched the bandages.  Sho and Aiba followed Nino’s stare at his chest.  There was a long moment of silence before someone spoke up.

“It was successful, the heart transplant.”

Nino looked up at his two best friends.  Sho nodded as he bit his lower lip with discomfort.  “We were so scared when you suddenly collapsed in the hall, Nino.”

“Don’t ever scare us like that again, Kazunari,” Aiba added.

Sho nodded.  “Your sister lectured my ear off about looking after you.  Did you know she has the same bratty attitude as you do, Nino?”

Nino cracked a small smile before he turned his gaze towards the drawn window.  Aiba noticed this and walked around the bed to the window.  He slowly pulled the first heavy layer to reveal a sun sinking in the horizon of the metal jungle called Tokyo.

Sho brought over a small tray of hospital food and placed it on the foot table.  “Time for dinner, Nino!  I bet you are starving after the surgery.”

Aiba helped Nino sit up as Nino replied to Sho’s remark.  “I’m so hungry; I could eat one of Masaki-kun’s experiments.”

“Hey, those can turn out to be good sometimes,” Aiba protested as Nino immediately ate a spoonful of rice.  Nino rolled his eyes as Sho gestured Aiba to sit down.

“So,” Nino said as he slurped his miso soup greedily.  “How long?”

Sho and Aiba glanced at each other with worried looks.  Sho clasped his hands.  “The doctors said about 2 weeks in the minimum-“

“Sweet!  I’ll be out of here in no time”, Nino interrupted happily.

Sho glared at Nino, who grumbled an apology and went back to eat, and continued.  “But the doctors also said no physical-bearing activities for 2 months.”

Nino’s spoon slipped out of his hand as soon as he heard the news.

The coffee shop was finally done for the day.  A part-time worker bid his farewell and went home for the evening, leaving the owner to finish the rest of the closing duties to himself.  The owner sighed to himself as he made his way back around the counter.  He pushed the play button of his iHome and smiled when music filled the entire shop.  The owner lazily picked his towel back up and began to wipe the counter when the bell signaling a customer rang.

“I’m sorry but we’re clos-“

He looked up only to see a familiar face.  He goes back to cleaning.

“Toma-kun…” he said softly.

Ikuta Toma stepped forward towards the owner with a soft smile.  “Hey there.  You alright?”

The owner nodded as he walked to one of the tables and started to wipe them off.  “I’m fine, Toma-kun.”

Toma grumbled under his breath as he stepped forward to the owner.  “No you are not, Oh-chan.  If I wasn’t your best friend, I wouldn’t be here right now.”

Ohno Satoshi slowly stopped wiping the tables as his best friend’s words finally sank in.  Ohno brought his hands to his eye level and studied them intensely.

“He’s gone, isn’t he...”

Toma couldn’t say anything as he stared at his best friend.  Ohno’s statements scared him so much that he couldn’t move from his spot.

Ohno’s hands began to tremble as he drew them close to his chest.  “He’s gone…”

Toma reacted quickly and caught the dangerously swaying Ohno as he collapsed to the floor.

“Oh-chan!”  Toma called aloud as Ohno curled up in a tight ball, crying.

“He’s gone…he’s gone forever”, Ohno cried out over and over again as Toma struggled to comfort the older man.

Toma patted Ohno’s hair with a steady, making hush noises.  “It’s okay.  Cry it all out, Oh-chan.  You were strong for the last week.  Very strong…”

Toma watched as his childhood friend slowly reduced to hiccups and sniffs as Ohno hugged Toma’s waist tightly as a security blanket.  Toma hugged the man back as rain began to fall.  He looked out the windows with wonder.

“It’s raining…”

Ohno ignored his comment as he continued to sob, soaking Toma’s police uniform.

“There there Oh-chan.  Cry all you want now…”  Toma cooed as the rain came down harder.

Ohno gasped for air as tears continued to came down along with the rain.

“He can’t be gone…”

Ohno looked up the small framed picture on the back counter.  There were a small vase of white roses and some incense sticks lit.  A happy Ohno held up half-eaten watermelon with a handsome tall man smiling next to Ohno.  Ohno bit his bottom lip as he remembered that cheerful memory.

Ohno looked up at Toma with his tear-stricken face.  “How could he leave me, Toma?  I miss him so much already.”  A new bundle of tears filled his eyes again as he finally faced the horrible truth.  “Is it okay for me to miss him so much, Toma?  Is it?”

Toma couldn’t take it anymore and started to cry alongside Ohno.  The two grown men hugged each other as the rain came down harder and harder.  This loneliness surrounding Ohno ate his insides away.  This feeling of depression was horrible and raw for Ohno as he rocked back and forth.

“I miss him, Toma.  I miss my beloved Jun…”  Ohno whispered.

Toma couldn’t say anything as he choked up.  “I’m sorry.  I’m so sorry, Satoshi.”

The night continued to pour down.
