Kris fumbles with the keys and finally manages to find the right one. He unlocks the door and steps in, happy to be done with the day. The financial quarter is closing in and everyone has been running around trying to meet targets. It's hectic to say the least.

It's late in the evening and the house is quiet. Kris smiles. He likes coming home because it is his place to unwind. Thankfully, the addition of his flatmate hasn't changed that. The lights are off in the living room. She must be in her room, he reasons. He makes his way to the kitchen. He switches on the lights, looking for a glass. As he pours himself a glass of water, he notices a pot of freshly brewed coffee in the coffee maker.

You always know what I need

Kris thanks his lucky stars and proceeds to heat the coffee. There is a small note next to the coffee maker telling him that dinner has been cooked and is in the microwave. Is she not at home, Kris wonders because they normally have dinner late at night. Did she go out? Is she working late or is she with her friends? She should have left a note!

I worry about you dummy

He frowns and goes to his room to change. He washes up and goes back to the kitchen to drink coffee. He doesn't feel hungry yet. Maybe he'll wait for her to come back. He considers messaging her and asking. Then he shakes his head and decides against it. He doesn't want to seem overbearing. She should be back soon. She is sensible after all.

Maybe the sports channel has reruns of the basketball league matches again tonight. He decides to go to the living room and watch some TV. When he switches on the light he realizes that someone is curled up at the end of the couch. He realizes belatedly that it is his roommate. She probably fell asleep while studying.

Ku ai

He chuckles when he sees that her head is buried in a textbook. He realizes that her exams are coming up soon. He mentally thanks God for having graduated last year. He doesn't think he could have written another exam again. She looks like an innocent baby, all curled up. Her fingers are wrapped around the sleeves of her oversized sweater and her hair covers her head.

Should he wake her up? Kris wonders if she already ate. But then again she normally doesn't fall asleep like this, so she must be really tired. He decides to let her sleep in and get some really needed rest. He gets a comforter to cover her. He carefully removes her book and her glasses. She stirs and her eyes flutter open.

She looks at him and blinks. His hands freeze midway while covering her with her comforter. "You're home" she notes in a light voice. "Yeah" he replies in a slow whisper. He doesn't want to wake her up now. "When did you come home?" she asks, sitting up properly. "Half an hour ago. You should sleep if you want" he tells her. She shakes her head and rubs her eyes. "I need to study for a test tomorrow. Did you eat yet?" she asks him.

"Not yet" he tells her. She nods. She's half asleep and he notices her eye bags. "You should sleep. Study in the morning" he says firmly. "It's okay..." she starts. "Don't overwork yourself" he chastises her. She looks at him guiltily and he feels a little bad for scolding her too. "Come on. Let's get you to your bed" he tells reaching his hand out. She holds his hand gingerly.

That feels nice

He pulls her up and she wobbles a little as she manages to stand. She takes a step forward but crashes into the coffee table instead, nearly tumbling his now cold coffee over. "Sorry" she replies nervously. Kris shakes his head. He bends down and lifts her up bridal style. She exclaims in surprise and buries her head into his chest instinctively.

You're so warm

He carries her to her room and lays her down on her bed. She thanks him while blushing furiously. He brings the comforter back and uses it to cover her up, making a cocoon of terry-wool around her. She protests and he tells her to go to sleep again. She lies down grudgingly, but on the virtue of being tired falls asleep again soon.

Kris tugs the comforter and covers her properly. He bends to her eye level. She has pretty eyelashes and lips. There is a small smile on her lips now and that makes him feel nice too. "You're so dumb" he says, not sure if he is addressing himself or her. He walks out of the room, closing the door behind him gently. He runs his hands through his hair.

Maybe I am the dumb one after all

He smiles to himself as he heats up the long forgotten coffee. Being dumb for her, might not be so bad...
