Re: Evangelion Redux Part Duex 1080p Special Edition
For those out of the anime scene since their formative high school days, Gainax has remastered Neon Genesis Evangelion to glorious 1080p with a new character and some extra scenes.
Visually this anime is impressive. I saw at least 5 studio credits along with Gainax and the motions were beautifully fluid. As a nod to their original anime budget some of the Eva cheap animation signatures were kept (Gendo's hands folded, drinking coffee, a cigarette moving during speaking portions, etc.).
The little technological updates were a nice touch. The obelisks/NERV board of executives are slim and sexy. (Not) Panasonic tough books. Plug suits look like something pilots could wear in the future. Cell phones. But you would think iPods or some future-tech equivalent would be available. C'mon Shinji stop being a hipster you know that cassette tape is gonna warp.
The plot? Really? You're asking me about this part? I guess you have to. I got the feeling that Gurren Lagann did a much better job with the "You're the only one for me DEFEAT THE IMPOSSIBLE BECOME A GOD GET THE GIRL ORAORAOROAORA!" Innumerable monetary costs in terms of property and advanced biotechnological weaponry destroyed. EVA get hungry. The red oceans are red. There is a little more exposition devoted to why Shinji is what he is. (A pussy.)
Gendo wins the Dad of the Century award.
If I were a high school religion teacher I would make my students watch this redux in its entirety. Then they have to write for me a 5 page paper--double spaced, 11 point Times New Roman font--on how Evangelion relates to the Genesis story and themes seen within Judeo-Christian mysticism. By the way all sources must be cited. Wikipedia, anime forums, and other term papers written by previous students are not allowed.
I'll admit Evangelion blew my mind 15 years ago. It's the sort of anime right of passage that stands the test of time with Akira, Wings of Honneamise, Dragon Pink, and other pre-1995 anime. Watching it now, knowing what I know, Evangelion just invites me to be peanut gallery.
