Chapter 1: I've always loved you, Sora
I didn't know why but I had a feeling junior year was going to be the best year of school ever. Kairi, like always, agreed with me about my premonition, but Riku thought it was going to be the worst year of our lives.  Unfortunately, he was correct.

I remember the day before junior year was about to start. I remember the way that Kairi slid her auburn hair behind her ear when I asked what she wanted to do on the last day of summer vacation. She just gave me a sincere smile, one that only Kairi could give so effortlessly, and suggested we go to Play Island. I remember Riku scaring me by patti

Kairi, Riku, and I went down to Play Island. It was a little island surrounded by clean, blue water that reminded me of an unpolluted paradise that uncommon in  and was very relaxing compared to the big city we lived in. We had a fun-filled day of swimming in the ocean, acting like little kids, and eating papou fruit. It was just another end of summer getaway for us. At the end of the day, we took our seats on a Papou tree, me in the center, Kairi on my right, and Riku on my left, and looked at the sunset. I suddenly started to wonder why the sunset looked the way it did, and asked

"Kairi, why do you think the sunset looks red?" I had no clue why I asked Kairi, and not Riku. I mean Riku was more knowledgable than Kairi. After all, he was in all advanced classes, but he was held back in Kindergarten so he should have been a senior. Maybe, it was because I wanted to hear something positive since Kairi was always a ray of happiness and light. Riku could be happy, but he always saw the glass half empty.

Kairi answered romantically, " Well, I think it's because the red sunset is meant to be in the center of the blue sky in the day and  the black sky at night. The blue sky and black sky can never meet because the red sunset won't allow them to. But I think one day they will meet."

Riku laughed and said seriously, " The sunset is red because the sunsets' light must travel through more atmosphere and blue wavelengths are scattered away from our sight, while red wavelengths go through the sky and into our sight."

"Way to ruin Kairi's explanation, Riku" I said playfully.

"Sora, if I didn't tell you why the sunset is red, you would have never figured it out." he said jokingly.

Kairi just laughed, and said ," I don't know what I would do without you two in my life"

"Don't you mean just me, Kairi? Sora is sometimes as interesting as a log."

" Riku, you are never fun, all you talk about is science and school"

" Well, sometimes he brags about how great he is at swimming" Kairi retorted

" I have to agree with Kairi. I  mean I am the best swimmer Destiny High ever had."

" In your dreams, Riku"

" Hey guys, it's getting late. I think we should go home to the city" Kairi stated.

I looked at Play Island one last time then at Riku and Kairi.

Then I said happily,

" Well, it's been a fun summer."

Then the three of us left in our separate boats. Halfway to the city, I looked up at the night sky and saw the first star, I quickly made a wish for me, Kairi, and Riku to always be friends. Thinking back on it today,  I think that the star cursed me. When I came home my mom said quickly,

" How was your day, Sora? Did you finally get together with Kairi? Did she give you that charm she always carries around with her? Was Riku jealous? I just knew Kairi would be your girlfriend ....."

I hated how my mom was like twenty questions, and I think she would be too excited if Kairi and I got together. Wait..... Riku wouldn't be jealous if me and Kairi got together. Did Riku even like Kairi that way? I just couldn't imagine Riku being with someone who was so different than him. But in chemistry, they do say that opposites attract. But I think science doesn't apply to human relationships, so Riku wouldn't be interested in Kairi.Ugh, this is too confusing for me to handle.  Anyway, I needed to respond to my mom before she continued to talk herself silly....

" Mom, Kairi and I are not together" I said in an annoyed tone

" Oh honey, tomorrow will be another day to ask her out" she said hopefully

" Mom.... I don't like Kairi that way" I said seriously and then I headed into my room to go to sleep.

" Oh Sora, you can't lie to your mother" she said triumphantly

My mom was right, I did like Kairi. Ever since she came to the island, I wanted to run my hands through her auburn hair and tell her how beautiful she really was- inside and out. But I don't think she feels the same way, she always looks at Riku not me. Love really was hard, but I learned to accept the fact that Kairi would never love me. Anyway, being her friend was enough for me. And with that last thought , I fell asleep.

It really wasn't until the first day of junior year that being her friend wasn't enough for me.

My alarm clock woke me up at 6 a.m, which was way too early.  And I thought "Welcome back school!"  After getting ready for school and eating breakfast, I boarded the bus and sat next to Riku as usual.

" So Sora, don't you miss waking up at 6 a.m?" he said sardonically.

"Well, sarcasm in the morning really does wake me up." I said just as sarcastically

Riku laughed at that, and then remained silent the rest of the bus ride. I looked at the people on the bus, and saw the biggest bully of the school- Seifer Hikado. I was cool with the guy since everybody loved me, but I felt bad for the nerds he picked on. He was especially known for taking nerds' clothes as they took showers. Then, I saw the beautiful and bright- Selphie Koitsu. She was tied with Riku and I for number one in the class. Then I turned and saw the introverted and intelligent- Xion Kilmit. She was usually picked on by Seifer, but she would later  make a name for herself by being given a scholarship to attend Cambridge University. I saw many other people on the bus, but didn't know there names because they were all freshman.  At that point , I thought Riku and I should have carpooled to school like every other junior.

Soon, Riku and I arrived at school and we saw Kairi park in the school's A parking lot. Then, she saw us get off the bus, and came up to me and Riku.

" I can't believe you boys still take the bus" she said as she smiled at us.

I rubbed the back of my head and Riku said" Well, we know now to drive to school like every other  junior and senior."

As Kairi was about to say something to Riku, Roxas Honda came up to Kairi

" Kairi, I-i' ve wanted to ask you... something for a very..... long time. Can we... speak in private?" he admitted nervously.

" Sure, Roxas." she said sweetly.

Then Roxas and Kairi headed inside the school. I wondered what he wanted. Kairi and Roxas had been in the same AP Lang class last year, so they must have become friends there. He looked so nervous though. It must have been something really important, and as hard as I thought I couldn't figure it out. Wait-a -minute, was Roxas going to ask Kairi out? I mean he did look really nervous, and why else would someone be nervous in front of Kairi? It must have been it. I just needed to see what was happening, so I asked Riku,

" Hey, do you think we should see what's going on with Kairi and Roxas?"

" Sora, let Kairi deal with this by herself .  After all, you can spend time with me, and who wouldn't want to spend time with me?"

I rolled my eyes and said, " Look Riku, I think i'm going to follow Kairi and make sure nothing happens to her."

Then I ran from Riku, and I swear I heard him say under his breadth,

" Sora.....don't"

When I got into the school, I looked all over for Roxas and Kairi. However, I couldn't find them anywhere. I looked in almost every classroom in the B hallway and already looked in the auditorium.....

But then when I stopped looking, Roxas came up to me and slapped me in the face.

" You bastard, you stole Kairi's heart." he screamed

" W-what?" I said shocked.

" For number one in your class, you're so stupid. She loves you, and she's always loved you. I'm just a nobody in her eyes"" He said angrily

I was so overjoyed at that moment, I felt like dancing even though I couldn't dance to save my life. Then I tried to calm down Roxas, but it was to no avail. When the bell rang I headed to the auditorium. I was so excited to get my schedule for junior year there. We had four periods a semester, and it looked like first semester I had :

A: AP European History with Mr. Lea
B. AP Calculus AB with Mr. Strife
C. AP Physics with Mr. Xehanort
D. Gym with Mr. Goofy

I kind of chuckled when I read my gym teacher's name. Then I checked to see if Riku and I had any classes. And it looked like we had the same A period and B period classes.  After Kairi and I checked to see if we had any classes together.  It turned out she had the same A period as me and Riku, but no other periods with us.

After the assembly where the principal told us " To study hard, and then play hard", I looked at Kairi. She was the girl, that first called my name in a sweet way. She was the girl, that first  played with me when all the other girls wouldn't. She was the girl, that first admitted to someone that she loved me. And I was going to be the first guy, to be her everything.

So I whispered to in Kairi's  ear confidently but hesitantly,

"Do you really love me?"

She looked unsure for a moment, but the next second that hesitancy was gone and she said genuinely,

"I've always loved you, Sora,"

After Kairi said the words i've always wanted to hear from her, I looked at her with a warm smile. Then I embraced my girlfriend.

As I embraced her, Kairi cried

In the future, I learned her tears were not those of joy.
