'How To...' w/Filters

Aug 11, 2007 20:11

I've seen some people having problems creating filters at some of the other journal places (especially GJ), so here is my contribution to the move. :)
We will be using Semagic for this, since it's the program I use. I have no idea how to do it using other programs.
This applies to GJ, IJ, JF, and of course LJ.

How To Create Journal Filters/Friends Groups
1. Log into your GJ account in Semagic.
2. On your tool bar, click on Journal>Edit Friends
3. Under the Friends tab, click 'Update From Server'
4. Once the update is complete, click on the 'Friend Group' tab
5. On the far left you have a box with a list of default filters, usually just Friends and Communities. You can't edit the names of already created filters, but you can add new ones.
6. Click on the new button (the dotted square), and a new filter will pop up.
7. Name your new filter whatever you want.
(Example: Beta Friends -or- Harry Potter Communities.)
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until you have all the filters you wish.
(You can also add new filters if necessary later. Just follow steps 2-4.)

How to Add Users/Comms To The Appropriate Filters
1. Click on the filter you want to add people's names too
2. Select the names in the 'Not In Group' column
3. Click the 'Add To Group' button at the bottom
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for all filters

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
Make sure you click 'Save Groups and Lists' at the very bottom before closing the screen or going to a different tab. Otherwise all your hard work will be lost.

After this initial set-up, adding people and coms to filters is easy. When you click on 'Friend Me', the usual filter page should show up. Just click on the filters you want to add them to as normal. :)

If anything needs cleared up, if you have any questions, feel free to comment and let me know. :)

Edit: I've decided to make this post public, just in case any of you want to link to this post for any reason. ::has delusions of grandeur::
