Never Gonna Fall In Love Again
“Have you seen John around?” Rodney looked up at the person whose voice had interrupted his train of thoughts.
“Sheppard? No. Not since we got back to Atlantis. Why?”
“I heard that the both of you were released and I was just wondering how he’s been.” Rodney coughed. “Are you feeling alright?”
“Yes, yes, right as rain. After all, I’ve been exposed to extreme amounts of radiation in the span of one year than I have ever since I was back on Earth. I feel wonderful.”
Elizabeth smirked. “But then again Rodney, you’re in a whole different universe now.” Rodney mumbled something indistinguishable. “Okay, okay, I know when I’m disturbing someone’s work.”
“Thank you,” Rodney called out to the back of Elizabeth as she walked off to find John.
If I died, would you fall in love again?
Perspiration dripped from his chin and dropped onto the dark floors of Atlantis. John breathed in deeply, before exhaling and wiping the sweat from his chin. Even though he sweated enough today, what with him being so close to the sun and all, he felt that a run would be suffice. He didn’t really want to do much except just run. When he was a little kid, he felt that whenever you needed to think, jogging around the park or something was the best treatment.
He didn’t want to face anyone much now, not at the moment. He needed this moment for himself. No scientists. No high priority situations. No nothing.
He took a chug of his water before heading off again for another lap around the northern pier.
Don’t say things like that. They might come true. Quick! Knock on wood!!
Elizabeth sighed tiredly and looked down at the mission files in front of her. She had looked for John for a bit before she was called back to her office to return to her cave and her endless paper trail. No luck. She had wondered briefly where he’d gone off to before she realised something.
Elizabeth flipped the papers off her desk and slid her laptop towards her. Her desk looked messy but what did she care? She pulled up the calendar that was programmed to coincide with Earth time and Atlantis time. Looking at the date, since it was the only real calendar near her, she realised why John’s been missing.
Nothing’s going to happen to me. You’re just paranoid.
John lay down on his favourite balcony that had the best view of the stars at night and sighed. Memories from years ago floated back into his mind against his will.
“Please! Don’t leave me…you’ll make it through this! Just hang in there!”
Cold lips touched John’s hand as he held her hand. “It’s alright. Hit and runs happen all the time. I bet the docs can patch me right up.”
John chuckled a bit but sniffled at the weak voice. “I bet they can. Just hang in there till we can get you to the hospital.”
“Don’t cry. I hate to see you unhappy…please don’t cry.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Great, now you’re making me cry.”
Elizabeth’s hand froze but she didn’t care. It was late at night and she guessed that if John wasn’t in his quarters, he’d be stargazing out on some balcony. She’d been to each balcony that offered a good view and was now making her way to the highest balcony to check. Hoping John was there.
She swiped her hand over the panel and she found the person in question lying there half asleep. He opened his eyes lazily and looked over to the door to see who the intruder was. Seeing a familiar face, his features softened.
“Hey Lizabeth. What’s up?”
“Oh, nothing much. Just endless paperwork, same ole, same ole. Needed a break.” Elizabeth laid next to John and offered him a spoon. “Cookie dough?”
“Thanks.” John took a big scoop from the cardboard container while Elizabeth placed it between them on the metal ground.
“I didn’t get to thank you personally today. I didn’t realise it until a while ago that you carried me all the way to the infirmary. Thanks.”
“It was no problem. If I let you fall, you’d probably get a concussion and be trapped in the jail that is the infirmary.” They both laughed at this.
“You have a mission in seven hours. You feel up to it?”
“Of course, why wouldn’t I?”
“For one, you aren’t sleeping. And two, today has been a busy day for you and it was originally your day off.”
“Day offs never go according to plan.”
“And they probably never will.”
“But in a good way or else it would be too dull.”
“Too true.”
More scoops of ice cream were taken. Silence was bliss to the both of them and minutes ticked away, with both of them enjoying the view and the peace. Soon the ice cream container was empty.
“Well, the cookie dough’s gone now and that’s a sign that it’s time for my bedtime.” John got up and brushed himself off.
“I bet if we had a bigger tub you’d still be eating.”
“That is until one of us gets sick.”
“Of course,” laughed Elizabeth and started walking for the door.
“By the way, thanks for being there for me,” John mumbled.
Elizabeth, who was in front of John, didn’t hear him properly. “Sorry? You say something?” She turned and looked at him.
“Huh? Oh, never mind.” Elizabeth looked at him a bit longer before heading inside. In the distance, John heard Sam make a whale-like noise.
If I died, would you fall in love again?
‘At that time, I said no but now…’ thought John as he looked out to the horizon.
“John, hurry up or you’ll catch a cold!” Elizabeth called out from inside, her watching him.
“Coming.” John smiled at Elizabeth.
‘Too late now…’
