I would think he was trying to be helpful, but you know how males are; they don't have a proper use of vocabulary. Nor the female sophistication with words. If he is making you feel so bad, then maybe you should tell him. You don't need any more pressure (let's face it: NONE of us do), and he should know (because he can't seem to figure it out on his own) that you can't handle it at the moment.
And I don't think it is your self-confidence that is at stake right now: you are going through a lot, and it is harder for you to handle things when it doesn't go as planned. Things like to blow up in your face, and there are many situations where we can't handle it. You'll be fine, I know you will and I have COMPLETE confidence in you. You know that.
And about Japan: YOU ARE GOING TO BE DAMN FRICKIN FINE! Sensei prepared you guys getter than my own teacher did, and I didn't know a single thing compared to what you guys know right now. Even if it is all in Japanese, don't freak out, because you can raise your hand and scream "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!!?" if need be (but not in those exact words).
We are all here for you, and I'll cry with you if you want (because I nearly did that at dinner today). I remember when my grandma died when I was in Japan: it took me months to go without crying every night. It hits me all the time, but I know it'll all be okay. And so will you. See you tomorrow.
